The Wolverine Orchestra (1923 - 1924)
The Wolverine Orchestra was named after
Jelly Roll Morton's song "Wolverine Blues".
They made their first Chicago appearence in
1923 and first Gennett recording in 1924. The
band played frequently at the University of
Indiana, where Bix meet Hoagy Carmichael
and the band recorded his "Riverboat
Shuffle". Later that year the Wolverines
played in New York and shortly afterward,
Bix Beiderbecke left the band to join the Jean Goldkette Orchestra. He was replaced
by seventeen year old Jimmy McPartland. The group recorded one more record in
December of 1924 but broke up soon afterwards.
