Redoubt Schilde
Hidden behind the trees : Right wing of George Front Caserne and part of the blown-up entry postern
(Picture July 1999)
Build : somewhere between 1906 and 1909 (?)
Material : Concrete
Enemy Fire :
None or limited, but the redoubt was destroyed in 1914 by
the Belgium Army.
Guns : One 7.5cm gun (type Cockerill Mod 1909) and two additional
7.5 cm two more 12 cm guns.
Layout :
During the inter-war periods, most redoubts on the right bank
of the river Schelde, were enhanced with small concrete casemats.
These small resistance posts were supporting the infantry and
were defended by a Machine-Gun company.
Most probably inter-war build casemats. All redoubts except Lauwershoek
and Landmolen were re-employed as infantry support points.
