The JukeBox: Music and Pool
So there you are. At the pool hall. Ya look good, you're shots are dropping, and everything seems to be going right. Then, a while later, maybe a few racks later, you slip into a mini slup. What happened? You just can't explain it. You have something to drink, you walk around, but still, you can't get back "into" your groove. I have a mini solution to your mini slup. Go to the Jukebox, and play some of your favorite music. Hell, if you like the Spice Girls, then get your "Wannabe" or "2 Become 1" going. An important thing to realize is that the songs can be slow...they'll relax you the best.
Here are some of the songs that either get me going or relax me when playing pool:
Prodigy - "Breathe". There is something almost magical about the opening riff of this song. If I'm playing Straight or Eight, and it's my turn, and this song comes on, forget it, it's OVER--automatic win. This song will indeed keep a run going. ("...breathe with me...")
Rage Against the Machine - "Bulls on Parade". Very similiar to the previous song; definately keeps the run going. This song is awesome when breaking. The line: ("...ahhh, microphones explode!..."), is like a rush. BAM. Break time. ("...come wit it now...")
Bush - "Glycerine". Great song. It's a Nine ball song. Doesn't get played as much as it should. But it always puts you into that 3 minute and 50 second trance. ("I'm never alone, I'm alone all the time...") <== oh yeah.
DJ Kool - "Let Me Clear My Throat". What a old-school party song. This will get the whole pool hall dancing and singing. What a riot. It doesn't actually help my game, but it's great fun!
Madonna - "Take a Bow". One of the slower songs I enjoy. The power this song sets over the whole pool hall cannot be put into words. Very r-e-l-a-x-i-n-g. Nice, slow, rythmic pace. The girls love it, and the guys pretend they don't like it.
Ini Kamooze - "Here Comes the Hotstepper". This song is awesome. What an incredible beat. You may not know which exact song I'm talking about by the name and artist, but you would know it if you heard it. It has a really cool reggae` sound. And finding someone who knows the words is hard to come by. Well, maybe that's why I like it so much. ("...I know what Bo don't know, touch them up and go, uh-oh, chich ah chang chang...")
Metallica - "Unforgiven II". The first Unforgiven was ok, but the second sounds so much better at the pool hall. That's just me. I'll probably get some flames from the true Metallica fans out there, but it's my opinion.
Here are some songs that I absolutely hate to hear when playing pool:
Warren Zevon - "Werewolves of London". Guess what- It might have worked for Tom Cruise in The Color of Money, but this song is WAY to commercialized nowadays. Don't get me wrong, the song itself is great, just keep it out of the pool hall.
Notorious B.I.G. w/ Puff Daddy - "Victory". I don't like the song. What the deal with Busta Rhymes? That I'll never figure out. And honestly- does Puffy really have to use profane language at the end? C'mon...what warrants that? lol.
Third Eye Blind - "Jumper". I like the song, I like the band (to an extent), but this song seems just so out of place. Granted, the lead singer has no harmonic sense, I can accept that, but this song is almost as bad as the Spice Girls with "Wannabe". (Wait...that's two references to the Spice Girls in one page. <dr evil:> Shit.)
R.E.M. - "Everybody Hurts." Yeah when you play this song at a pool hall. Leave the REM home.
