| 8365(Feb 98) | At the age of 18, 8365 was still running all day long in Feb 98, she was retired in the summer of 1998. 8365 was then rebuilt and became 2050 finally, her license # BF 1400 was retained as she returned to active service on Oct 31 1998. |
| 8536 (1998) 8536 (1999) 2105 (2000) |
GM bus 8536 which later became 2105 (BJ 6269) after the body rebuild in 1999 and mechanical rebuild in 2000. These photos were taken on Aug 6 1998, Apr 14 1999 and Jul 29 2000. |
| 8540(Jan 98) | 8540 has been running active continuously in the past 20 years and you can see the gradual changes on her since 1998. It was the body rebuild that the livery and the GM logo change, then the license plate BJ8910 replaced the BF5842 and finally the fleet # 2107 replaced the 8540. |
| 8558(original) | After about 14 years of service, 8558 was retired and parked in the Birchmount open yard since late 1994 and this picture was taken in June 1997. In early Aug, the TTC decided to rebuild all the 8520 and later series GM buses that retired prematurely. On Nov 16 1997, 8558 was rebuilt and reentered passenger service after about 3 years of storage. This photo was taken on the last day of 1997. In Dec 97, the TTC decided to renumber the rebuilt GM buses into 2000 series. Since 8558 was the 6th rebuilt car, 8558 then became 2005 on Jan 10 98. 6 years and 3 months later in Dec 2004, 2005 was retired and was back to storage again. These pictures were taken when 2005 was just a few weeks before the final retirement. |
| 8917 (original) | Oct 1997 and May 1998 views of 8917: After the rebuild, 8917 received new side marker reflectors, floor wash connector, new livery and a new license plate later. |
| 8799 (original) | 8799 remained in the original 1982 livery in April 97, no GM buses got the repainting warranty and the repainting has to be done by the TTC itself. Later, 8799 received a 12 year rebuild and got the new livery in Aug 97. |
| 8532 (1992) | After servicing for about 13 years, 8532 was retired in 1994. But she was rebuilt and became 2012 in 1998 after staying in the storage yard for 4 years. Here is the 1992 view of when 8532 was at Landsdowne yard. The original license # BF5814 was retained in both 8532 and then 2012, indicating that the bus was not delicensed in between 1994 to 1998 when she was sitting in the storage yard. 2012 later received the new license plate BK 1941 as well as the very original engine cover from a retired STCUM GM bus, the "Vehicle should not pass the bus on the right" sticker which does not exist on TTC buses can be found on all STCUM buses (Example: STCUM 22-028 and 23-122) |
| 2013 (Apr 2003) | 2013 (BJ 6251) received new body panels in early 2003 probably because of an accident and returned to active service in April 2003. After 6 years of service, 2013 (ex. 8528) was retired "again" in Jan 2004, The first retirement of 8528 was in 1994, the rebuild program brought the bus back and 8528 was renumbered to 2013 in Jan 1998. |
| 8831 (original) | Both 8831, before and after the 12 year rebuild, showed the different design between the Classic and new livery. |
| 8892 (original) | 8892 was the last few buses in the 8740-8985 series from Wilson division to receive the 12 year rebuild. Here 8892 was seen on her very last day final trip before the rebuild. There is an Oct 98 view of 8892 after the rebuild. |
| 8157 (original) | At the age of 18, 8157 returned to a midday Spadina subway shuttle service after receiving some minor life extension repair in Aug 1995. 3 years later on Sept 17 1998, 8157 was seen at Finch station with a 1997 license # BJ4854. See also 8157 view from the door side. 8157 went for a 18 year rebuild later, the same bus returned to service on Mar 25 1999 with a new fleet # 2150 and her fourth license # BI8832 in her 22nd year career in the TTC. |
| 8166 (1998) 2154 (2000) 2154 (2004) 2154 (retired) |
1977 GM bus 8166 / 2154 (BJ4855, BJ8887) has been in relatively good conditions such that the bus remained in active service for 28 years until April 2005. 2154 was lucky enough as the bus was moved to storage after withdrawl instead of being sold for scrap. |
| 8522(in 1981) | These 6 photos show how 8522 has been doing since 1981. In 1981, 8522 had destination curtain and license # BC1748. In 1990, 8522 was repainted (no photo available here) with the then new license # BF1497. May 1998 was the time that 8522 finally needed a major rebuild. This is a view showing 8522 with the basic paint only inside the painting room when she was about to be repainted. In July 1998, 8522 returned to service with the 1991 license # at first before receiving a 1998 license # BJ7205 late in 1998. 8522 was renumbered and became 2718 in 2000 and 2718 was later installed with the UWE system for outdoor storage and the BJ7205 license plate was retained. |
| 8541 (original) | 8541 was waiting for a body rebuild at the storage yard on Oct 12 1998, the Ontario license plate was still seen at her back. In March 1999, 8541 returned to service with LED tail lights, unlike the earlier rebuilt GMs, no floor wash connector was installed on 8541 and later rebuilt GM buses. Despite all the changes including the body and the fleet #, the 1998 license # BJ 6271 still exists on both unrebuilt 8541 and rebuilt 2108. |
| 8543 (original) | 8543 (BF5845) was one of a few 1981 GM bus that has always been active in all day service in the past 18 years without major rebuild, 8543 was finally rebuilt and became 2092 (BJ8884) in Sept 1999 with about 12 more years down the road. |
| 8548(original) | 8548 had received some mechanical overhaul and partial repainting in fall 1998, so she could become the last bus in that class going to the rebuild program. It means 8548 was the last bus before the 8570 series going to the rebuild program. 2100 got another new license plate BK1789 even 8548 had received her BJ6273 license # in 1998. |
| 8574(original) | Despite the new fleet # new license plate policy on most of the 2000, 2150 and 2600 series rebuilt buses, most 2700 series buses have their original license # retained, the license # BF 2015 from 8574 remained on 2725. The GM logo on 8574 was replaced as well. |
| 8579 (1998) 8579 (1999) 8579 (2000) 8579 (2001) |
8579 (BF2019, BJ8942) was renumbered to 2796 at the age of 19. These photos were taken on Jul 9 1998, Apr 26 1999, Jan 27 2000, Jul 22 2001. |
| 8586 | 8586 was a 1981 GM bus that received body and mechanical rebuild at the same time in early 2000, the bus was renumbered to 2744. Later, 2744 became the first GM New Look bus that was installed with UWE system in early July 2000. The photos were taken in Nov 1998 and July 20 2000 respectively. |
| 8613 (1999) 8613 (2000) 8613 (2001) |
After staying in storage for about 2 years, 8613 received some mechanical and structural work before returning to active service in summer 1997 due to bus shortage. 8613 received the direct 18-year body and mechanical rebuild and became 2737 in Feb 2000. 2737 was reallocated to Danforth with the UWE system installed. These photos were taken in May 1999, Sept 2000 and July 2001. |
| 8614 | 2734 was one of the bus that received body and mechanical at the same time in late 1999, the original license # BF1539 was retained. 8614 was seen working as a Scarborough RT shuttle bus Route 603 in Jan 1999, it was a sunny afternoon but a few series of snow storm continued to flare up in the next few days and 8614 was still needed in the all-day shuttle service in the next few days. |
| 8616(BF1540) | 3 photos showing GM 8616 in between Mar 1999 and June 2000. They are 8616 (BF1540) in old livery, 2755 (BF1540) in new livery and 2755(BK1954). 8616 was the second last GM bus that was designated for body and mechanical rebuild and she was renumbered to become 2755. The license plate was also renewed to BK1954 in June 2000. |
| 8650 / 8963 | Wilson-based 8963 and Eglinton-based 8650 spent a weekend at Eglinton yard. 8650 received body rebuild and new livery in February 1999. This photo was taken in September 1998. |
| 8654(original) | 8654, a 1982 GM received body rebuild in 1998. The original license # BC7349 became BJ7247, her GM emblem was replaced by a GMC one. Since 8654 has received the 6 year mechanical overhaul at the age of 12 in 1995, the fleet # 8654 was retained. 8654 should become a 2700 series bus once she gets the 18 year mechanical rebuild. |
| 8658 (1998) | As 2757 entered service, the body rebuild program on GM Fishbowls was supposed to be finished and 13 GM buses were deemed to be unrebuildable. As the demand of buses increased, 11 of these 13 buses also received body and mechanical rebuild, they were renumbered with the even #s starting from 2768. 2788 was 11th bus. Here, 8658 / 2788 still carries the BJ 7248 license plate, the same bus has been assigned to Wilson (Dec 98 photo), Eglinton (Sept 2001 photo) and Malvern (Feb 2002 photo). 2788 is now assigned to New Eglinton. |
| 8664 (1996) | GM 8664 / 2812 (BF1704, BJ7250) was assigned to old Eglinton in 1996, then moved to Wilson in 1998, Malvern in 2001 and the bus is now at new Eglinton. On the other hand, 7527 arrived at Eglinton in early August 2004 and the bus has begun active service in mid August. |
| 8674 (1998) | These 4 photos reflect the gradual changes on 8674 in between May 1998 and Mar 2002. It includes the body rebuild in the summer of 1998, the mechanical rebuild and subsequently the renumbering of the fleet # to 2802 in 2001, the UWE installation in late 2001, the replacement of the license plates, from BF 1766, BJ 7254 and then BK7320 in 2002. |
| 8683(original) | 8683 was the first bus that received body and mechanical rebuild together in the 8570-8729 series (except 8571) and she was renumbered to a new 2750 series to signify that fact in Sept 1999. But later, more unrebuilt 1982 GM buses needed mechanical rebuild and so they decided to do the body rebuild at the same time (similar treatment as the 2000 series), the policy of renumbering them to 2750 series was discontinued as there is virtually no difference between a 2700 and a 2750 series bus. The photos were taken on Sept 7 1998 and Sept 23 1999. |
| 8688 | Malvern's 8688 was withdrawn from service in 1994 due to body structure failure. In late 1997, 8688 became the first 1982 GM bus in the 8570-8729 series that received major body rebuild. In July 1999, 8688 received the mechanical rebuild including the new power steering with new fleet # 2704. We can only identify her as ex 8688 by her 1992 license # BF5755 |
| 8700 (original) | There were relatively fewer changes on 8700 comparing with the other rebuilt buses. LHS photo was taken on Apr 10 98 at Jane station, RHS was taken on Jan 29 99. The license # BJ5353, the GM emblem and the original steering wheel were retained. |
| 8705 (Dec 98) | Unrebuilt 8705 was on the midday Dufferin 29 service for the withdrawn Orion VI CNG buses in Dec 1998, 8705 had her body rebuild later and returned to service in May 1999, the same bus finally received mechanical rebuild and became 2813 in Apr 2001. We can track the former ID of 2813 by the license plate BJ 5357 which belonged to 8705. |
| 8707 (1998) 8707 (1999) 2815 (2001) |
8707 (BF1787, BJ6316) received body rebuild in May 1999 and the bus was renumbered to 2815 after the 18-year mechanical rebuild in Feb 2001. 2815 became the first bus in the 2800 series to be retired in Mar 2005, just 4 years after the rebuild. |
| 8709 | On April 27 1999, 8709 was seen with an unusual silver back bumper, she continued in service until one day in early June when the same bus was spot, the fleet # was changed to 2701. All the other features such as the unusual silver bumper and license # BJ6318 remain unchanged. Note: 8709 was the first 1982 GM bus from Birchmount that received body rebuild in 1997, she was also the first one in the garage being renumbered into a 2700 series bus. |
| 8711 (1998) 8711 (1999) 2769 (2000) 2769 (2002) |
Birchmount-based GM bus 8711 (BJ 7118) received the 18-year body rebuild in the fall 1999 and was back in service in Oct 1999, a few months later, 8711 received the 18-year mechanical rebuild and the bus was renumbered to 2769 in April 2000. 2769 was later installed with the UWE in 2001 and the bus should look like that in the next few years until final retirement. These photos were taken in Jun 1998, Oct 1999, July 2000 and May 2002. |
| 8716 (1999) 8716 (2000) 2853 (2002) |
1982 GM bus 8716 (BJ7121) received body rebuild in Nov 1999, then mechanical rebuild and became 2853 (also BJ 7121) in Oct 2001. These photos were taken in Apr 1999, July 2000 and Oct 2002. 2853 is not going to get the UWE installation because of the change of the policy. Notice at Kennedy station that an elevator has been installed in between 1999 and 2000 |
| 8720(1) | 8720 has had 3 different liveries in the past 18 years. 8720 had the original BC7421 license # and the destination sign on the door side is smaller. (Left photo by the TTC), the bus was repainted once in 1991 and there was a body rebuild in 1999 and 8720 was repainted again with new livery, 8720 will be renumbered into a 2800 series bus soon in the year of 2001. |
| 8725(original) | May 21 1999, Oct 20 2000 and Mar 2 2001 were the different times but the bus BJ 3201 was the still same BJ 3201. 8725 received body rebuild and returned to service in fall 1999, 8725 was then out of service in Dec 1999 for about 10 months because of "smoke emitting from rear duals". Mechanically unrebuilt 8725 came back in Oct 2000 and she was renumbered to 2820 in late February after receiving the 18-year mechanical rebuild. |
| 2855 | The rebuild program on the 2700-2858 series buses began in spring 1999 and completed in December 2001. Danforth-based 2855 (BJ 7214) returned from the 18-year rebuild in November 2001. This photo was taken at Pape station on Dec 26 2001. |
| 8729(original) | 8729 received body rebuild and returned to service in August 1999, 8729 still has not received the mechanical rebuild and so she is still not a "Class A" bus for now. 8729 has had 3 license numbers in her past 17 years, they are BC7428 in 1982, BF1746 in 1990 and BJ7125 in 1998 respectively. Here is another Sept 1997 view showing her 1990 license BF1746. |
| 8746 (2000) | As 8746 (BL 2678) lost the Michigan style clearence lights during the
18-year rebuild. Unrebuilt 8776 becomes the only bus in the TTC fleet that still has the
original clearence lights on the front and back. New LED tail lights and markers are also
found on 2246. |
| 8753 (original) | As 8753 went through the 12 year rebuild in 1997, she received a new steering wheel, new livery, a different GM emblem. These 2 photos were taken in June 1997 and Apr 1998. |
| 8762 (1998) | 8762 was one of a few (if not the only) 8740-8985 series GM buses that never installed with the washer connector ever. The TTC decided to add the washer connector for all newly rebuilt buses including the GMs and some D40-90 Flyers when the bus rebuild program began in 1995. The washer connector was not successful and no more newly rebuilt bus received that starting on bus 2041 in late 1998. These photos were taken in Oct 1998, May 1999 and Aug 2001. |
| 8767 (2003) | 8767 (BJ7265) lost the "7" on the back windshield in Oct 2003, 8767 lasts long enough to receive the new "yield" sticker in Jan 2004. |
| 8770 (in 1995) | As the old GM buses become more reliable, more modifications have been applied in their subsequent maintenence works. 8770 was the third 1983 GM bus (the first 3 were 8942, 8960 and 8960) receiving the then 12 year rebuild in Sept 1995, more items were added as 8770 went through another body work in Sept 1998. See also the door side of 8770 with the 1995 look. 8770 received the 18-year rebuild in the summer of 2000. The GM logo was replaced everytime there was maintenance work, it was the "GM" and "GMC" made of silver metal during the 8770 era and the "GMC" which was made of black plastic when the bus became 2270. |
| 8785(original) | 8785 had already received the new license plate BH8982 in late 1996 before she was seen at Finch station in July 1997. 8785 was reallocated to Birchmount later and waiting for her 12 year rebuild there in late 1997. After the rebuild, 8785 went to Wilson and was on Dufferin 29 in this Nov 1998 photo. |
| 8836 (2001) | 8836 (BJ1049) was one of the early rebuilt buses that was done in the summer of 1995. Some of the then or the original features such as the clearence lights, the washer connector, the round-shaped marker reflectors on the back and sides have been replaced in their 18-year rebuild as the bus became 2336 (still BJ 1049) in July 2002. |
| 8842 (original) | Malvern 8842 received new front body panel recently because of an accident. The damage was probably insignificant and perhaps 8842 was basically running in rush hours only since her 12-year rebuild under Malvern's umbrella, therefore 8842 not rebuilt to a 2300 series bus yet. A closer look indicates that the damage around the fleet # 8842 still exists after the accident, this is a close-up view on the front of 8842 before the accident. |
| 8893 front (original) | 8893 (BK7336) lost the old GM emblem after the 18-year rebuild, 8893 was renumbered to 2393 in late 2002. |
| 8893 (with ad) | 8893 / 2393 (BJ1092, BK7336) has been a frequent guest at Eglinton W Station before and after the 18-year rebuild. Wilson and Malvern used to wrap their GM fishbowls before the decision was changed in the year of 2001. |
| 8902 (1989) 8902 (1996) 8902 (1998) 8902 (2000) 8902 (2002) |
After running about 14 years, 8902 received a body rebuild in late 1997 and returned to service in early 1998, her 1990 license plate and the GM emblem were both changed after the rebuild. The original 1983 livery featured more white color just below the headlight while it is more red in the new livery. 8902 had received 4 plates: BC9414, BF1897, BJ7138, BK1761 in the past 20 years. The first photo (photo by Jim Bowman) was taken in July 1989 near York Mills station, the second photo was taken in 1996 at old Eglinton station. 8902 was renumbered to 2402 in the summer of 2003. |
| 8919 (1996) 8919 (1997) 8919 (1999) 8919 (2003) 2419 (2004) |
GM bus 8919 / 2419 (BF1997, BJ7149, BL2488) had been in relatively good conditions that the bus did become the last few buses to receive both the 12 and 18 year rebuild in late 1997 and mid 2004 respectively. |
| 8924 2424 |
8924 (BL2490) had a silver rear bumper just before receiving the 18-year rebuild in the fall of 2003. |
| 8936 (with ad) 8936 (2001) 2436 |
A few GM buses were chosen for the vinyl body wrap ad back in the year of 2000, 8936 (BH 9017) was one of it. 8936 got smaller fleet # and new plate BK7348 after the bus was unwrapped. 8936 was renumbered to 2436 in Jan 2002 after receiving the 18-year rebuild. |
| 8941 | GM 8941 and 8960 were seen at Kennedy station in October 1997. 8941 was in the original painting scheme without signs of any repainting in the past 14 years of service when being photographed |
| 8946 (original) 8946 (interior) 8946 (floor) 2446 2446 (floor) |
8946 / 2446 (BK7352) and a few New Looks such as 8812, 8836, 8854, 8936 had received the Diamond Grit floor on the trial basis during the 12-year rebuild in 1995, The Diamond Grit floor became more slippery to some passengers in the snowy days and so these floors were replaced during the 18-year rebuild in early 2004. |
| 8967 (2002) | 8967 (BK 7362) received some body work on the front end at Wilson garage in late 2001, the unusual fleet # stickers were reapplied. 8967 had the 18-year rebuild and became 2467 in Dec 2003. |
