Flyer D40 series (6300-6359, 6420-6434, 6440-6521, 6560-6638)
Malvern has got all the Flyer D40-90s by early 2001. 6636 and a few were among the last few units that left Arrow Road and joined Malvern in early 2001. Click for larger photos.
| 6312 | D40-87 Flyer 6312 had become a rush-hour-only bus since 1996 after reallocating to Malvern from Queensway. Malvern received 3 D40-87 Flyers (6301, 12, 37). 6312 was the first to go. This photo was taken in August 1998. |
| 6316 | After losing the body-wrapped ad, D40-87 Flyer 6316 was still assigned to Eglinton garage before heading to Queensway for her final months. Here 6316 was seen in Jan 1999, just 6 months before her official retirement. |
| 6318 | When most of the D40-87 Flyers were retired, a few remaining ones have received some repair with a little repainting. 6318 was one of them. The front on the door side was repainted while the side wasn't (see the contrast in colors). The fleet # 6318 just above the headlight on the driver side was lost. |
| 6337 / 6614 | In 1996, two former Queensway-based Flyers moved to Malvern. 6614 (new to Eglinton, then Queensway) was reallocated to Malvern and she became a Class A bus after the first 6 year rebuild. 6337 (new to Wilson, then Queensway) was also sent to Malvern as a body ad bus but she always worked in the rush hour only backup duties. 6337 was finally retired in March 1999 and 6614 is still in active service. |
| 6343 | Danforth-based 6343 (BE 4210) was on the midday 64 Main duty. 6343 later received a BJ license plate and was reallocated to Queensway before the bus was retired in late 1999. This photo was taken in August 1997 at Main Station. |
| 6346(original) | After the removal of the body ad in the summer 98, the fleet # on the back of 6346 was also lost and it was also about the time to retire 6346. As the Orion 6 CNG buses were grounded in Sept 98, the retiring 6346 was required to stay a 6346 (new) little longer and she regained her fleet # at the back. The smaller size # on the top was also up again, but the style of the "6" does not match with the previous ones. |
| 6423 (1997) | D40-88 Flyer 6423 was seen just after the 6-year amd the 12-year rebuild, the photos were taken at Bathrust station and Bathrsut / Eglinton. |
| 6446(original) | A few changes were made to Flyer D40-88 6446 in between Apr 98 and Jan 2000. 6446 has now received new LED tail lights, new license plate BK 1720 and a smaller fleet # just at the lower left of the engine cover. |
| 6457 (1998) | 6457 was assigned to Eglinton for the vinyl-wrap ad purpose in late 1998, the time when there was a policy that only D40-88 or 89 Flyers were used for the body wrap ad. |
| 6459 (1999) | Eglinton-based 6459 was wrapped with the HP Printer ad. This photo was taken at Yonge and Eglinton on Oct 30 1999. |
| 6460(original) | 6460 was among one of a last few remaining Flyer D40-88 series bus that received new LED tail lights by mid Nov 1999. It seems that the shells of the new LED lights on both sides don't match with the design of the bus, but they are more functional and can last much longer. |
| 6477(original) | The news about the structure failure on the Orion 3 articulated buses shocked the TTC in May 1995, so the state of good repair program began in the summer of 1995 to save the crumpling bus fleet. The then 6 years old D40-88 and 89s were the first group of Flyers to receive rebuild, new paint scheme and new license plate. BE7891 of 6477 in 1992 became BJ7182 of the same bus in late 1998. The style of the new clearence lights are similar to that of the rebuilt GM buses. 6477 was new to Hillcrest division in 1989, then Wilson, Eglinton and finally Queensway garage now. |
| 6496 | Flyer 6496 was seen at Eglinton West station in the fall of 2002. |

A few high floor buses have received the experimental seating arrangement, more forward-facing seats (much like the pre-1978 fishbowls) were added just behind the center doors. This seating arrangement has been adopted on the new low floor buses. |
| 6312 & 6574 (1) | Both D40 Flyers buses have the same body structures but different fates. 6574 received her first 6 year rebuild in 1997 under the state of good repair program which began in late 1995. 6312 also received her first 6 year rebuild probably in 1994. Today, 6574 has a new livery and is considered as a Class A bus. 6312, which has a simplier mechanical structure (no A/C) is a junk and is retiring soon. We can see the difference in the liveries as well as the electronic destination box from this photo. |
| 6564 (2002) | Flyer 6564 (BK7393, BL2031) had no chance to meet Orion 7500 (BL6561) on the road. 6564 was photographed on Jun 13 2004 when it was almost the last week in active service, it took about 3 years to retire all 79 D40-90 Flyers. |
| 6565 (1997) 6565 (2000) 6565 (2002) 6565 (2003) |
6565 (BF4055, BJ4865, BL2032) was new to Danforth in 1990 and was reallocated to Arrow Road briefly in 1997 just before receiving the 6-year rebuild. The 6-year rebuild in late 1997 kept the bus to stay active for another 5 1/2 years as 6565 was retired in Mar 2003.
|
| 6576 | The position of fleet # on the back of 6576 is different from others. |
| 6584 | 6584 was on 60E when she was photographed in summer 1998, the bus were reallocated to Malvern a few months later. |
| 6585 | 6585 left Danforth and joined Malvern right after the 6-year rebuild in 1997. |
| 6595(retired) | 6595 and other D40-90 Flyers have been retired, useful parts are being stripped off. |
| 6587 | Flyer 6587 was seen 10 years ago in 2001 when the first 4 Flyer D40-90's began to retire, followed by 11 more in 2002. 19 Orion artics were retained for rush hours services only. |
| 6606 | D40-90 Flyer 6606, just a month before retirement, received door parts possibly from a retired D40-87 series Flyer, that piece of the door remained in the old livery. Here is a closer view on the door. |
| 6610 (BF4095) | Flyer D40-90 6610 (BF4095, BL2632) was seen in active service on Apr 17 2004. 6610 was among one of the last few D40-90s (such as 6574, 6621, 6635) that received the 6-year rebuild in 1998. |
| 6611 | 6611 also joined Malvern recently after leaving Arrow Road in late 2000. |
| 6617 | 6617 was distored somehow when 6617 was photographed in Oct 2001. |
| 6625 | 6625 was on the afternoon rush hours duty when seen on Dec 18 2001. |
| 6627 | 6627 is the first D40-90 Flyer that received the 12-year rebuild, the bus was repainted and the "Easier Access" sticker has been removed. |
| 6634 | 6634 was on 39E in a March 2001 morning after joining Malvern for about 3 months. |
