Top Photo: An August 1998 view at Birchmount garage. After 12 years of service, 6077, 6078 and 6079 were about to head to her native garage, Arrow Road, in where they used to be based at when they were new in 1985. In 1993, 6072-6085 were sent to Birchmount for the withdrawn 1981 GM buses/ The bus rebuild program on the 1985 D901 Flyers has been completed as 6121 returned to service. 197 of the total 198 buses were rebuilt and only 6080 is still out of service since mid-1998. 6080 is not likely to be rebuilt.(click for larger photo).
| 6136 (front) | The TTC started to rebuild the 1985 Flyers D901 buses in 1998, 6136 was the second rebuilt bus after 6073, the photo were taken on Mar 14 1998. |
| 6019 | There have been a few examples in the early 90's when the 1985 Flyers were vinyl-wrapped with advertisings. Only the D40 series Flyers were used for body-ad purposes until the summer of the year of 2000 when almost all bus types are used for body advertising. Danforth's 6019 (BJ 3178) was seen as an example with the Jean Machine wrapped ad on Aug 10 2000. |
| 6077 | Route Keele 41 used to use Lansdowne buses in the early 1990s (8046-8051, 8100-8117 were seen often), As Lansdowne closed, Keele 41 was taken over by Arrow Road and Keele 41 became a wheelchair accessible route in 1996. As the 9400 CNG began service in late 1996, the operation of Keele 41 was transferred to Wilson and 9400 CNG buses were extensively used. In Sept 1999, there is no more lift equipped bus on Keele 41 and the older bus 6077 was seen in this Oct 98 photo. |
| 6083 | After Birchmount received all 6640 series Orion 5 buses, the 6000 series Flyers became surplus and 6083 became Arrow Road based to replace some of the 7000 series Orion 5 buses duties such as Sheppard West 84 in this Jan 99 photo. |
| 6089 | 6089 went into a snowbank just right at the SW entrance of Finch station in the Jan 13 99 afternoon rush hour and the west side platform at Finch station was closed because of the accident. a recovery truck was in the process of towing 6089 away from the slushy snow, all the bus on the west side platform had to load on the east side. This is my other photo taken from inside the bus platform. See the Singtao daily photo on the view of 6089 from the street side. |
| 6130 | On Feb 2 99, the RT service shut down for another 13 hours and 6130 was seen running on Route 603 in Scarborough town centre as a shuttle bus. |
| 6144/6166 | Recently rebuilt 6166 and unrebuilt 6144 were both seen at Danforth yard in summer 1998, the position of the clearance lights were moved after the body rebuild. 6144 and 6166 ranked the 174th and the 192th respectively among the whole class of 198 buses. |
| 6169/8694 | 6 years after taking this photo: 6169 has been rebuilt and was reallocated to Arrow Road, 8694 was rebuilt, renumbered to become 2730 and reallocated to Eglinton, even Birchmount yard has also been rebuilt and upgraded. |
Top Photos: 1985 Flyers D901 6074 with the original and new liveries. Not only the "New Flyer" logo, the small fleet # on the top corners were removed, but all Birchmount - based D901 Flyers were also reallocated to Arrow Road garage by early September 98.
| 6007(original) | 6007 was at Pape station in July 1998 and Scarborough Town Centre in May 2000. 6007 was new to Wilson in 1985, went to Danforth in 1991 or 1992 and the bus is now Malvern-based. |
| 6024 (original) | 6024 was new to Wilson garage and was still there in summer 1991, the bus was ready for servicing York University students at the North platform of Wilson station on route #106, the bus to the right was 6518. 6024 was rebuilt in 1998 and was reallocated to Arrow Road after the rebuild. This is another Jun 1 2002 view on 6024. |
| 6039 (original) | Feb 22 1999 was probably the last day or so for unrebuilt 6039, rebuilt 6039 returned to service in June 1999. The photos were taken at Eglinton West station and Kipling station respectively. |
| 6045 (1999) 6045 (2000) 6045 (retired) |
6045 (BF5975, BJ8944) and 6582 were both retired in late 2003. 6045 became the first rebuilt Flyer D901 to go after the bus received the 12-year rebuild in the summer of 1999. These photos were taken in April 1999, Oct 2000 and Feb 1 2004. |
| 6046(original) | My first "before and after" shots on the rear of a 1985 Flyer D901, 6046. We can see the clearence lights were moved down, the Ontario public vehicle license was removed, the "Please Yield" sign was renewed. The bus was also reallocated to Queensway garage after the rebuild. |
| 6056(original) | The front of unrebuilt 6056 looks more like a 8400 series Flyer despite the attempt to put the gray paint on the top but it was stopped half way through and it makes an interesting appearence. 6056 was rebuilt in 2000 and the BJ4588 license # was retained. |
| 6059(original) | 6059, a Danforth-based bus, was at Kennedy station working as a Bloor Danforth shuttle bus on Jan 15 99 during the January snowstorm. 6059 disappeared later. Right: 4 months later, 6059 returned to service after receiving the body rebuild and she is a Queensway-based bus now. |
| 6061 (1998) | Arrow Road's 6061 (BF5984) just finished the 35A run when she was photographed in Apr 1998, the GM bus at the background was a leased ex. Utah bus. 6061 (BJ8946) was reallocated to Queensway after the 12-year rebuild. |
| 6068(original) | 6068, BJ3127, was on 32 Eglinton West. Photos were taken in Dec 98 and May 1999. |
| 6086(original) | Even the Flyer D901 buses consume about 15% more fuel than the GM New Looks, they are still a better choice than the D40 series buses. 6086 returned to service after going out of service for more than 9 months. Here is another photo on 6086. |
| 6098(original) | 6098 was one of a few buses that didn't receive a BJ license plate in between the years of 1996-1999. The 1992 license # BF 6041 was retained until the bus returned from the rebuild program when the new BK1800 license plate became available. 6098 was new to Birchmount in 1985, went to Queensway in 1998 before reallocating to arrow Road in late 1999. |
| 6105(original) 6105 (new) |
2 photos on Flyer D901 6105 (BJ4658) taken on July 21 1999, May 10 2002. The postion of the clearance lights and the markers were changed. |
| 6108(original) | The same bus 6108 was seen twice at the same place (Eglinton West station), same 32B route, but the different time (one in April 1998 and the other one in Aug 1999) makes the difference. An interesting June 98 view of 6108 shows the different style of fleet # , the first 3 digit to the left 610 and the third digit to the right 0 are different from those of the others. |
| 6114(original) | At Kennedy station on #20, 6114 just received her 6 year overhaul and the then new license #BF6051 on this 1992 photo. In late 1996, 6114 was repainted with new decals and new license # BJ4727 but that didn't last long. In late 1997, the 12 year rebuild program on the 1985-86 Flyers began and the rebuilt 6114 came out on Nov 23 98. Her license #BJ4727 was retained. |
| 6120 (1) | 6120 (BL2022) suffered from suspension system problem on Apr 30 2004 while the bus was on the 139E afternoon duty. 6120 has returned to service in late May 2004. |
| 6122(original) | Flyer 6122 received new license # BJ 8829 in April 1999 just before going to the rebuild, another new license plate BJ 8936 was given to 6122 just about 2 or 3 months as the bus came out of the rebuild program. The license plate BJ 8829 probably had the shortest life span (2 to 3 months?) in my memory. |
| 6154 (original) | Flyer 6154 was seen in Nov 1998 and Jun 2002. 6154 lasted 18.67 years and was retired in Feb 2005, the bus ranked 180th among the overall 198 buses in this class. more |
| 6164 (original) | 1986 D901 Flyer 6164 received unrepainted panels just before the bus went to the 12-year rebuild program in 1997. Unfortunately 6164 was the first few buses in that series to be retired in Nov 2004. |
| 6187 | Queensway-based 6187 was wrapped for Bell in Aug 2003, 6187 was reallocated to Malvern before the final retirement in Feb 2006. |
| 6198(original) | 6198 was ready for afternoon rush hours service in an early 1998 afternoon at Queensway after being recently reallocated from Malvern. 6198 was rebuilt later and went to Danforth with new painting scheme. |
| 6201(Jun 98) | Evidences of some earlier body work, which had been done in 1997 when 6201 was still Malvern-based, the bus was finally rebuilt in early 2000. 6201 (BJ4609) was refurbished and repainted in Oct 2005 while most of the other 1985-86 D901 Flyers are retiring. |
