8214 in summer 1993 8257 on Sept 7 99

1978 Flyer D800B: As the last batch of the 1978 Flyers have accumulated more than 2,000,000 km on their odometer, Some of them were removed from active service after their last run in the week of Feb 20 1998, they were 8215,23, 30,33,37,45,47,48,52 followed by 8251 in Sept 98. The last remaining D800B Flyer 8257 was also withdrawn in Sept 99. We can only see these buses in the storage or scrap yard now.

Top Left was the interior of 8214 with the original fleet #. The photo was taken in the summer of 1993, 8214 was retired in early 1996.

Top Right was the interior of 8257, larger size fleet # replaced the small one as she returned to service in Mar 1998.

8215
8215 was one of the rare example that the small size fleet number on the front below the windshield was replaced by a TTC logo. 8215 was retired on Feb 20 98.

8231
A Sept 97 view at Kipling station where the 1978 Flyers 8223 and 8231 were still required to be used in a midday service.

8238
8238 seen at Kipling station in the summer of 1992. 8238 retired in March 97 at the age of 19.

8245
8245 was still running basically 19 hours a day, 6 days a week when she was photographed on Feb 11 1998. This was also her final days of service as 8245 was retired by mid Feb 1998.

8249
8249 was on her final months of service in this Aug 1996 view, 8249 was retired in early 1997.

8250
8250 was running on Spadina 77 (photo from Mingpao). 8250 was a rare example that carried both fleet # and TTC logo on the front, she was retired in late 1997.

8251
Aug 14 1998 was 8251's last week of her life after a full 20 year of active service, another view of 8251 was taken after her retirement on Nov 12 98 when she was still carrying the same ad as was seen on Aug 14 98.

8257
8257 was seen in service in the week of Mar 25 1998 after receiving body work and repainting. Since 8257 was the last surviving D800B Flyer, she was many favorites. On Nov 12 1998, 8257 was seen at Wychwood during a charter. This was the rear view on 8257, another really close up of the back of 8257 and her unique seating.

1981 Flyer D901L: As these buses have reached 18 years of age in 1999, (8396-98 ,8454,68 were retired by 1995). Since they have raked up very high mileage on the odometer, most of them will be retired very soon.

Left Top was 8415 on Feb 9 1998, just before her retirement. Here, the TTC logo was replaced by the fleet #. 2 more buses(8403 and 8395) look like this.

           8421 in 1987      8421 in 1998

Top Photos 8421 was seen in a June 1987 TTC pamphlet, the photo was taken probably when 8421 was about 6 years of age and 8421 looked more like the unrebuilt 1985 Flyers that feature white stripe on the top edge. 8421 did not have the white stripe on top anymore from the 1998 photo.

8383
8383 was seen in July 1997, 8383 had been running almost all day long in her past years before her retirement in the summer of 1998.

8383/8143
8383 (BJ5348) and 8143 (BD9426, a TTC GM bus with BD license #, there should be more but I can't recall) were retired from Queensway and Arrow Road respectively in the summer of 1998. 8383 used to be seen running almost 6 days a week and 8143 was almost running in rush hours only. Both buses have been scrapped.

8388
8388 was photographed in July 1997 and she lasted until Feb 1999, a little longer than 8383.

8392
8392 was also in her last few days of service after she was reallocated from Danforth tom Queensway in March 1999.

8395
8395, the last bus in the 1981 Flyers fleet that still has the small size fleet # at the front instead of the TTC logo, the other 2 (8403 and 8415) were retired earlier in 1998. This photo was taken just 2 days before her retirement as she was reallocated to wilson in her final month of service.

8408/6337
About 15 retiring Flyers (such as 8384, 8388, 8395, 8403, 8421, 8431, 8439, 8443, 8452, 8462 etc) were sent to Wilson from Queensway in late 1998 because Wilson needed extra buses. On Feb 5 1999, the partially repainted 8408 was about to begin the 139 Huntingwood service and 6337 was a Malvern standby bus. While 6337 was retired in the same month, 8408 and a few lasted long enough that Wilson released the surplus 8408 back to Queensway. 8408 was finally retired in July 1999. One interesting note was that 8408 began her career 6 years earlier and ended her careers 5 months later than 6337.

8415
8415 was seen on n Feb 9 1999, just before her retirement. Here, the TTC logo was replaced by the fleet #. 2 more buses(8403 and 8395) look like this.

8420

8420(32B)

On Feb 11 98. 8420 used to carry the Yellow Page ad for many years and was repainted with a new trial color (This color scheme has now been partially adopted for the new rebuilt and repainted 1985 Flyers that the Gray color is replaced by white color) in 1995 after receiving a major overhaul. The small size fleet # on the edges have been lost. See the back of 8420

8421/9374
An unusual Feb 5 1999 scene that a 1981 Flyer worked together with a 1991 CNG bus, 8421 was about to retire from Wilson garage while she had spent most of her time at Queensway. See another 2 photos of her past 18 years of service. During this 18 years, she had only 2 license #s: BC7182 (1981) and BF1348 (1990). See more 8421 above.

8424
8424 was seen in early 1998 at Eglinton West station, she received partial repainting in late 1997.

8429
8429 looks more like the 1985 Flyers D901 buses. she was sent to Wilson division after the temporary withdrawl of the few months old 1996 Orion 5 CNG buses in Aug 1998. 8429 was retired in mid 1999.

8458
8458 was in her last few months of service in May 1999, she was withdrawn in July 1999.
8465
8465 was one of a few of the remaining 1981 Flyers still carries the Ontario license plate. 8465 was retired in July 1999.

8470
8470 was reallocated from Danforth to Wilson for the withdrawl of the Orion 6 CNG buses in late Sept 98 and she was seen running on Dufferin 29 on Oct 2 98 at Wilson station. 8470 was retired in early 1999.

8473 8473 was on 25 Don Mills in August 1998, most of the 1981 Flyers look like this. 8473 was retired about half a year later.

8477
8477 was on 39C at Finch station from this TTC photo. 8477 was retired in late 1997 and stayed at Landsdowne with her fleet #s and TTC logo painted over.

8480
The last remaining 1981 D901A bus that is still running active in 1999. This photo was taken in Aug 98.

8482
Repainted 8482 seen in July 97. 8482 is one of the 10 D901A, the first bus model in which air-conditioning was first experimentally installed by the TTC for Downtown coach service. The A/C system designed in 1981 was unsuccessful and was removed after the first 6th year major overhaul. 8482 retired in the summer of 1998.
