Fosca is the new band of Dickon Edwards, ex-member of Orlando. They don't have any record out yet, but here's an interview with Dickon to know more about the band. citeweb.net/suede will keep you informed of Fosca's future releases !
You can check Dickon's web site as well.
Can you tell us about Fosca's history ?
Fosca is at present just the name for whatever I'm doing musically. I hope for it to become a proper band soon,
but at the moment it's just myself plus many friends from other bands and proper jobs, helping me out.
A version of Fosca was formed in 1997 (during my last months in Orlando) as a vehicle for me making very noisy
rock songs with a boy singer. We recorded some songs and played a handful of concerts together, but I soon realised
that that sort of music was not really "me". It's one thing to really like The Who, it's another to think
you should try emulating their music yourself. But the only way I could learn this was by finding out for myself.
This attempt ended in early 1998, and I spent the rest of the year trying to work out what to do with my life.
I was very unsure of myself. I have never been in a band where I am in charge before.
Then in September 1998 I was asked to perform at a free festival in London called "Queeruption", and
I decided to rehearse a few songs with a group of mostly female friends who could also play instruments and sing.
It felt a
little more right this time. So you should really regard September 1998 as the time of Fosca's formation.
Fosca played a second gig on New Year's Eve at Club V, with a completely different line-up to the first show! But
come the album, most of the members of both line-ups came in to record bits here and there.
What are Fosca doing at the moment ? Any gigs/releases/demos ... ?
At time of writing (March 1999), Fosca are finishing the first album, called "On Earth To Make The
Numbers Up". It will come out on whatever label likes it the most. I am then hoping people will be interested
enough in Fosca to ask them to play gigs and make more records, in which case I will find out which of these many
friends want to play in Fosca proper...! Then we shall be a fixed band. I really want to play abroad, expecially
in France, America, and Sweden.
Describe Fosca with 3 words...
Wordy. Anti-Rock. Arch.
You recently played at Club V, how was it ?
Shambolic but fun.
Who would you like to open for ? Who would you like to open for Fosca ?
I don't really like many other bands around at the moment. I suppose if we're talking pure fantasy it would
be nice to open for Belle and Sebastian, Luna, Damon & Naomi, Marine Research, Trembling Blue Stars, The Beautiful
South or Hefner, as these are all bands I admire at the moment. As for opening for Fosca, anyone who really wants
to can do so...
Orlando vs Fosca : similitudes, differences ...
I can only refer to the Orlando as it was when I was in it.
Similitudes: lyrically and aesthetically very similar. The melodies are similarly tuneful, but the delivery completely
different, as it's me and my friends singing rather than Tim. But the make up and blond hair stays...
Some of the new Fosca songs are re-worked Orlando songs that were never recorded, because I liked the lyrics.
Differences: Fosca is raggedy guitar pop songs. Orlando was more out-and-out
pop and soul.
What songs do you like at the moment ?
The new Beautiful South single, "How Long's A Tear Take To Dry". Lots of old songs like "Strange"
by Galaxie 500 and "Someday We'll Be Together" by Diana Ross and the Supremes.
What do you think about the Kenickie split, Suede return, Manics last album ?
Kenickie: sad and regrettable, but I'm sure we haven't heard the last of the
band members.
Suede: I am not a massive fan, but they have made a few good records.
Manics: I miss Richey.
Which popstars do you fancy ?
I don't really "fancy" people, but I am an admirer of personal beauty. So with that in mind, everyone
in Fosca. I also think Sinead O'Connor is still very beautiful, as are: Jarvis Cocker (without glasses), Martin
Rossiter of Gene, Damon Albarn and Alex James of Blur, Mel C (Sporty Spice), Dean Wareham of Luna, Stuart Murdoch
and Isobel Campbell of B&S, Lene of Aqua, Barney Sumner of New Order, Jessica Griffin of The Would-Be-Goods,
Bobby Wratten of Trembling Blue Stars, one or two of Steps...
What's your fave club in London ?
Club V.
Belle and Sebastian: cool or stupid ?
Neither.
