Location
In choosing a location for your aquarium there are several factors to keep in mind.
Is the location you have chosen to place the aquarium near a outlet?
You will need electricity to run filters, lights and heaters for your new aquarium there are a lot of components used in today's fish keeping hobby that require electricity. You want to make sure the location of your aquarium will not lead to extension cords running across a hall or main walking area.
 Are there windows nearby?
Most people in the fish keeping hobby try and set their aquariums up in a place where it is shielded from direct sunlight. Although it is not a serious problem it can play with the temperature of the water in the aquarium. As the sun shines on the aquarium in the day the aquarium will heat up and in the same manner it will cool at night. Fish are not very tolerant of quick or frequent temperature changes and that could cause constant health problems for the fish. Another problem you could encounter is sunlight would encourage the growth of algae. By using the proper fluorescent lighting and avoiding sunlight you will reduce the amount of algae that grows in your aquarium.
Do you have the proper stand for your aquarium?
Water weighs a lot. A small 10 gal aquarium will weigh over 85 pounds when filled. So if your aquarium is even larger you must have the right stand for it. For extremely large aquariums make sure the floor of your house is properly reinforced. I keep my 225 gallon in the basement. The water alone in this aquarium weighs almost 2000 pounds and the aquarium empty weigh over 500 pounds. Add the weight of the gravel and other equipment and you can see why the right stand and flooring is important.
. How big of a space is available for the aquarium?
Only leave enough space in the room for one chair so you can sit and enjoy the aquarium the rest of the room should be aquarium. Just kidding. Make sure you don't overbuy but get the biggest aquarium your space and budget will allow. The bigger the aquarium is the easier it is to keep. The bigger the ecosystem is the slower the changes in the water quality. In the same respects the smaller the aquarium the faster a water quality problem can get out of hand. Most have found that the larger the aquarium is the more they enjoy it as long as it is not more than the room can handle. Measure the available space for the aquarium and use the same tape measure to measure the aquarium you plan on buying. Make sure it will fit in the space you have set up for it.
