Adding Water
When setting up a new aquarium you cannot just add water and then dump the fish in the tank. The aquarium will need to cycle. If you add fish before your aquarium cycles you fish will likely die from New Tank Syndrome. To fill you new aquarium you can use tap water or reverse osmoses water. I would not suggest using distilled water as this has had all bacteria removed and will make it very hard to get the water to cycle.
You will want to have the gravel already in the aquarium before filling it with water. This will just make it easier to keep from overfilling the aquarium later. Once you have started adding the water fill it most of the way up then stop. At this point make final adjustments to gravel, filters, heaters, and other decorations. Then go ahead and top it off within reason.
