ABOUT TURN FOR NIGERIA

General Olusegun Obasanjo has won the Nigerian Presidential Election, expected to lead to a civilian government after 15 years of military rule.

Obasanjo, a former military ruler who is himself, received almost twice as many votes as his rival, Chief Olu Falae.

He promised to advance the cause of democracy under his presidency.

Election Results
Obasanjo 62,8%
Falae 37,2%
Total valid votes: 29.8m
Nigeria’s independent National Electoral Commission said General Obasanjo got 18.7m votes against 11.1m for rival Presidential Candidate former Finance Minister Chief Olu Falae who announced that he rejected the result because there had been cheating describing the poll as a farce.
Falae said he would challenge the result in court.

Most international observers however, including former US President Jimmy Carter, said the scale of the rigging did not affect the overall result. General Obasanjo had been widely expected to win.
Foreign observers conceded to some cheating and expressed concern over ballot-rigging in the economically-deprived Niger Delta region in particular - but did not single out either camp.

Both presidential candidates voted in their home towns on Saturday, expressing hope that the election would bury military rule.

"I would say the most single serious problem was incompatibility between the number of voters observed by us at polling stations and the number of voters reported," said President Carter.

Nigeria’s current military ruler, General Abdusalam Abubakar, has pledged to step down on 29 May, to make way for civilian rule.

The presidential election was dubbed the last stage of Nigeria’s transition to civilian rule.
