Cassia Welch
Great Aunt
CASSIA WELCH was born 27 October 1859 in
Richmond County, Ga. and first appears on the census in 1860 with her
parents Robert and Martha Welch.
She married:
1. William Henson on 7 March 1877 at the age of 18
in Richmond County, Ga and was later shown on the 1880 census living with
her parents. It is unknown why.
Nothing
further found on William Henson
2. She then married John E. Carroll born about
1845 in Jefferson County, Ga and and died in Richmond County, Ga and is
buried in cemetery #64 at Fort Gordon, Ga
The 1910 census shows Cassia and a son living in Langley, SC on Barrett
Street in Aiken County. Family Search LDS church has her dying in Langley,
SC on 15 April 1912 at the age of 52 and being buried in the Old Langley
Cemetery (see note). I have found nothing at
this time to confirm or deny this.
John E Carroll was her second husband and LDS also has him dying in Langley,
SC on 07 Aug 1902 and being buried in the Old Langley cemetery. They had a
son, David who is shown on the 1910 census as still living with her in
Langley, SC
-
Both are listed as being buried on Fort Gordon, Ga she in
cemetery #64 in the Bryant Cemetery and he in cemetery #65 the Carroll
Cemetery. I have walked the cemeteries at Fort Gordon, Ga and in the Bryant
Cemetery as well as the Carroll Cemetery there are no headstones or grave
markers. All information for the Fort Gordon Cemeteries is furnished by SSG
John and Libbie Davis and can be
found
here .

- NOTE:
- My wife and I attempted to walk the
Old Langley Cemetery in search of these and other gravesites, however the
Cemetery is in such a state of disrepair and decay that it was impossible.
Headstones were all busted up and kicked over and in some cases removed,
Some gravesites were sunken in, there were trees and shrubs growing in the
graves themselves, grave section retaining walls had washed away ( the
cemetery was on a hillside) the condition of this cemetery makes me ashamed
that I chose to live in South Carolina. It's not only appalling but
sickening as well.
