LOVE COUNTY, OKLAHOMA

It is now 10:54 p.m. (CST) on Tuesday, 1 May, 2001. After an evening out with my wife, I checked my e-mail before going to bed. One message was from Fortune City, the host for this page. In it, FC announced that they would cease to exist as of 4:00 p.m. (CST) this coming Friday, May 4, 2001.

I have everything on this site backed up on my hard drive, so as soon as I can find a new host, I will resurrect it. In the meantime, check out the Love County, OK, GenWeb site (http://www.rootsweb.com/~oklove/). I have another site about my Rowland's and my Weathers' at http://members.tripod.com/~Ray1935/index.html

I have been contacted by Mr. Harold Morris of New Orleans, LA, about a quilt he owns. It was made in Love County, OK, between 1933 and 1940. There are 30 names embroidered on the quilt. He would like to compile a history of the quilt and the ladies whose names appear on it. Here is what he wrote me:
The quilt I am researching was made by my grandmother, Lola (RENICK) SHIPMAN, between 1933-1940 in the Abner/Eastman/Sorghum Center area of Love County OK. There are 30 names on the quilt. Each name is embroidered and placed inside a block. Evidently the women each made one and passed it to the others. Here are the names on the quilt: Mollie (WILLIAMS) BARNES; Bell (LUNA) Bogle; Bonnie (CLARK) BOGLE; Nelda (HARRIS) BROWN; Opal (CARLILE) BROWN; Sallie (DOUGHERTY) BROWN; Thaylia BROWN; Lena (BOGLE) CAUDILL; Martha DOBBS; Inez (KING) FERRELL; Jonnie FERRELL; Beulah FREEMAN; Dollie HARRIS; Jewell (DOBBS) HUGHES; Ida JENKINS; Sadie (WILLIAMS) LOFTON; Lizzie (KING?) NIAMORE; Arzella (HARRIS) RENICK; Florence (SANDERS) RENICK; Hester (COUCH) RENICK; Dessie (LESTER) ROWLAND; Clifford (WALKER) SHIPMAN; Lola (RENICK) SHIPMAN; Nora (RENICK) SHIPMAN; Josie STRAUGHN; Dora (HOLDER) TANNER; Norma (RENICK) TESTERMAN; Della (HARRIS) WALKER; Pernie (PRINGLE) WALKER; Georgia (PARKER) WILLIAMS.

I am seeking brief bios of the women, dates of birth/marriage/death, maiden names, and where they lived during this time frame. Four of the women are still living and I have located at least three other quilts from this group.

If you can supply ANY THING about any of these women, please contact either Harold Morris or Ray Weathers. Thank you.

The only thing left of this community is a deserted cemetery which is located across the road, north, from McGeehee's Catfish Restaurant, and a couple of hundred yards east of McGeehee's airstrip.

My grandmother, Irzella Thamer (prounounced Tamer) Thornton WEATHERS and her youngest son, Woodrow, are buried in unmarked graves in the Arnoldville Cemetery.

BLANK SPACESLike a lot of places in our part of the world, Marietta and Love County have a colorful history, some of which we'll be posting as soon as it is possible to do so.

BLANK SPACESIn decades past when Texas had a waiting period for couples wishing to get married and Oklahoma did not, they would frequently slip over to the nearest Oklahoma county to tie the knot. Love County, of course, appealed to the romantic nature of the event and there were a LOT of marriage ceremonies performed in the county.

BLANK SPACESMy grandfather, Rev. Walter Pervia ROWLAND, ministered in Love County for about 65 years. He pastored every Baptist Church in the county except for the First Baptist Church of Marietta. He was the founding pastor of Eastside Baptist Church in Marietta. My Mother, Brother, and Niece still attend that church.

BLANK SPACESPhoto of marriage license for W.P. Rowland & Jewel Mabry
My granddad's first wife, Jewel Dallas Mabry, was my Mother's mother. They were married seated in a buggy in the middle of the road near the Tell Baptist Church at Tell, Childress County, Texas, in August of 1909. Granddad had just turned 19 the month before.. Jewel died during the terrible flu epidemic of 1918 after 9 years of marriage and four children.
To the left is a photograph of Grandad & Grandmother's marriage license. This photo was made in 1992 when my wife and I made a trip to childress to get a copy of this license and to see the community where they were married (the tiny community of Tell).

BLANK SPACESDuring his ministry, Grandad performed about 1,000 marriage ceremonies and conducted about 1,000 funerals. I have in my possession his original records of most of those weddings and funerals. However, his record keeping system was rather casual and disorganized -- except to himself. As soon as I can decipher his notes and enter his records on a computer, I will post them to this website. Meanwhile, if you (or your parents) were married by Grandad -- Rev. W.P. ROWLAND, would you please let me know?

Here is the transcript of one such wedding ceremony conducted by Brother Rowland

BLANK SPACESWHAT HAS COME OUT OF MARIETTA AND LOVE COUNTY, OKLAHOMA?

BLANK SPACESWell, for one thing, my brother and I were both born in Love County. I was born in town and he a couple of miles north of Hickory Creek.

BLANK SPACESLittle Brownie Cookies -- Remember when there were billboards for many miles around advertising "Fresh Broken Cookies -- 25 ¢"  Of course they were "fresh broken". Employees were paid to break them as they came out of the oven. Did you know that you can still get a big bag of "fresh broken cookies" for a dollar or less?
Little Brownie Cookies of Marietta went on to become the producer of the famous Girl Scout cookies and the name was reserved for those delicacies. The cookie maker is now known as President Baking and produces such brands as the "Marietta", "Famous Amos" and "Murray" cookies.

BLANK SPACESRalph EVANS -- Marietta and Love County building contractor, friend, and historian. Ralph's widow, Helen, has given us permission to post exerpts from his book FRONTIER DAYS IN LOVE COUNTY. Those exerpts will be coming soon.

BLANK SPACESMcGeehee's Catfish -- Delicious! Originally they raised all of their own fish in their own fish farm among the pecan trees along the Red River. Then it seemed that the whole world discovered the restaurant. The last several times I went, the waiting room was full at least an hour before the doors officially opened.

BLANK SPACESRobertson's Ham! When Granddad had his second hand store/fixit shop/electrical supply store/Avon sales (Grandmother) on Main Street, Robertson's had their butcher shop and meat lockers for rent just a door or so away.

BLANK SPACESRev. Walter Pervia ROWLAND, minister, businessman, pastor, author, my grandfather. He wrote a LOT -- some for his own amusement, some for publication. On this website we will be posting some of his autobiographical writings. In these snatches of his life and of his several brothers and sisters, we will see what life was like in the ROWLAND household. Along with me, you will learn that the godly man we knew was at times a rather mean little boy. To check out some of his autobiographical stories, click here.

BLANK SPACESThe Marietta Monitor -- keeping Love County and those of us with ties to Love County informed of the comings and goings of Love Countians for a very long time.
BLANK SPACESThe publisher and editor of The Marietta Monitor have given us permission to post exerpts from special historical supplements published in the 1970's about the really early years of Marietta and Love County, Oklahoma. Be sure to watch for them.
