Early Beginnings (1988- 1990)
Through the formal request of then Archbishop of Brisbane, Francis Rush, DD, Sr. Necitas Esguerra, FdCC, was appointed and begun her work with migrant Filipinos in the Archdiocese in 1988. Her initial work was exploratory in nature visiting different communities in parishes until she was able to form an Interim Committee. Meantime in 1989, Sr Velia Cristine, S.Sp.S. arrived and started working in Brisbane (north side) while Sr. Necitas worked in the south side.
Growth (1990-1996)
After training in 1989 at the Pacific Mission Institute in Sydney, Sr. Necitas embarked more intensely into the wider facets of migrant work, which included: visitations, counselling, retreats, organising Masses, prayer groups, Filipino traditional feasts and devotions and feasts, Basic Christian Communities (BCC) meetings.
After 3 years, Sister Velia Cristine returned for good to the Philippines, leaving behind her the still active Australian Filipino Christian Community (AFCCOM) which she organised. Sr. Necitas was then left alone.
Present Work (1996 - )
A new phase in the Chaplaincy begun at the arrival of Fr. Dom Flores, SVD, in 1996. He is the first full time priest Chaplain for the Filipino communities in Brisbane. During the 2 years since his arrival, he continued and strengthened the already existing organisations, movements and activities. Added to them now are organisational structure and, above all, a Pastoral Plan.
