DICE FAMILY GENEALOGY & HISTORY

My name is Craig Dice. I am the thirteenth generation of known Dices. The information on this page has come from many sources. Most or all of the information about the first four or five generations come from the following people: Ken Dice, Joyce Dice Metzger, Ric Dice, Daniel Lamb, Thomas Campbell, Alan Albright, and Jack Akerboom (who is in the process of completing a two-volume book on the Theiss/Dice history). Most of the information about the generations thereafter comes from Marilyn Sanford, Mabel Dice Manuel, and myself. This information has come from sources that I am in the process of documenting or from word of mouth or stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. If anyone has any additional information, stories, or needs more information, please e-mail me. You can also contact me if anyone would like a copy of my GEDCOM file, which I am constantly updating. Along with the Dice history, I have some detailed information on the following surnames: ARMANTROUT (ERMENTRAUDT), HAYES, COONS, SHOCKEY (SCHACKE), LINN, WARD, WALTMAN (WALDMAN), PECK, PETERMAN, MOTE, MENDENHALL, and LICHTENWALTER (LICHTENWALLNER). As always, I am eager to learn more about our family!!

In all the family records, DICE is spelled THEIS, THEISS, THEUSS, DEISS, DISE, and DICE, all sometimes in the same deed or other document. The original spelling was evidently the German THEIS, but then changed to THEISS. It is thought that this originated from the Theiss River in Hungary, now called the Tisza River, a tributary of the Danube. Tradition supports that the THEIS family may have come from Hungary, moved to Germany, and then immigrated to the United States. Once in the United States, many of the family members decided to "Americanize" their surname. Some kept the THEISS name, while others changed it to DEISS, TICE, and obviously, DICE.

In 1784, he moved to Letterkenny Township, Cumberland County (now Franklin County), Pennsylvania, in the Tuplehocken Valley, where he bought 4 farms, totaling 303 acres, from William Bard on May 29, 1784. As of 1949, there were a set of old buildings still standing. They were members of the Lutheran or Reformed Church, built in 1786 at Pleasant Hall, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

After the death of his wife, Johannes made his home with his daughter, Barbara, and her husband, Christian Grove, whom he evidently held in high esteem and trust. He married Martha Buchanan in 1820. She was born August 20, 1799 in Rockbridge County, Virginia. She died February 15, 1863, and is buried with David.

Martha remained in Virginia with their two children while John, Frederick, George, and David made a trip to Indiana around 1827. The brothers left their families behind and carried some savings with them. They also stopped to work their way as they came to Indiana. According to deed records in the Recorder’s Office in Covington, Fountain County, Indiana, John purchased 80 acres of land south of Veedersburg, Fountain County, Indiana for $280 on November 7, 1827. Frederick purchased 80 acres for $200 and 160 acres for $300 on February 29, 1828 in Fountain County Indiana. George also bought 160 acres for $350 in Fountain County, Indiana, on May 25, 1828. David stopped in Montgomery County, Indiana, about 5 miles southeast of Crawfordsville, Indiana. He decided to stay in Montgomery County to be close to Martha’s parents, who lived a few miles to the north near Darlington, Indiana. In March of 1829, Frederick and his wife, Catherine, platted and sold lots in Chambersburg, Indiana, on the north edge of Sterling (near Veedersburg). Frederick also had the first store in Chambersburg. He evidently named this new little village for the old Pennsylvania town of Chambersburg from which he used to live in. John, George, and David moved their families to Indiana around 1830. John’s son, Jacob, recorded the following statement: "Emigrated to Fountain County, Indiana, in the fall of 1827 in large wagon holding in its bed at least 100 bushels of grain drawn by four horses." David and Martha became members of the Union Presbyterian Church in Walnut Township in 1836. David was a fine citizen, and was highly respected by everyone.

EIGHTH GENERATION

42. Christopher (8) Dice (David, J Christian, Johannes, Hans Matthias, Hans Matthias, Hans Jost, Thomas) was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia on January 22, 1828. He died September 2, 1906. He is buried at Mace Cemetery in Mace, Indiana.

He married Jane Brockman on October 26, 1848 at her home. They were married by the Rev. C. Eastman and Rev. R.F. Caldwell. She was born January 12, 1832. She died July 30, 1866, and is buried with Christopher in Mace Cemetery.

In 1869, Christopher married Mary Broces. She was born on February 15, 1849, and died in Montgomery County, Indiana on may 1, 1910. She is also buried in Mace Cemetery with Christopher.

Christopher Dice was said to be the first man in the surrounding country to own a carriage, and people came on horseback for miles to see that carriage. When not in use, it was carefully protected by a cover that Jane made for it. Jane was the first woman to own a sewing machine, and this new contraption brought may curious women to see it work. Christopher and Jane and his family were members of the old First Presbyterian Church on the corner of Water and Pike Street in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana. Christopher was a deacon in the church and a staunch Presbyterian. He lived on the land that used to be his father’s.

The cabin that Christopher first lived in was built by his father, David, around 1830. But in 1868, the cabin caught fire. Not only was the house lost, but also their daughter, Anna, died in the fire. However, Christopher had already begun work on a new house nearby between 1860-1865. The house, still standing today, architecturally resembles Virginia Tidewater homes. The interior woodwork is Greek Revival in style. All but the shingles, lathes, and plaster were made on the property. Along with the house, Christopher built a barn, a grainery, and started an extensive apple orchard. The orchard has died out now and the grainery has been torn down, but the barn still stands, built with enormous hand-hewn timbers. Today, the framed land grant given to Christopher, and signed by Abraham Lincoln, is hanging on the kitchen wall.

When she threw the kindling into the fireplace, her apron caught on fire and she was burnt so severely that she died. Mark kept a journal in 1908, which tells of him doing his farm chores, his courting of June, and excursions to Crawfordsville to hear speeches. He regretted never owning his own farm. He also spoke of attending DePauw University and his disappointment when he had to quit in order to "help out on the farm" of his parents. In the newlywed years, Mark and June lived in several different home in the Mace and Crawfordsville area which were owned by his father, William Beecher. Around 1937, they moved with two of their sons, Fleming and David, to Waukegan, Illinois to manage a farm for Colonel Keehn, which was just north of Lake Forest, Illinois.

In Illinois, it was important for Mark and June to share knowledge and ideas and to keep up with events in Crawfordsville, and they did so with mail. Mark, being a lover of poetry, often sent birthday greetings to the family that contained quotations from famous poets. Even in his late eighties, he could recite "Thanatopis" by William Cullen Bryant. In their later years, Mark and june lived just outside of Elgin, Illinois, on Randall Road. Both of them experienced good health until their 93rd year. June developed a leg ulcer that would not heal. She moved to a nursing home and suffered a fatal heart attack the same day that Mark was expected to move to the home. She had chosen a dress and his favorite necklace for the reunion. Mark died just a few months later, having complained to his granddaughter, Anita Fonte, that he felt "so cold," and telling his daughter, Carolyn Fonte, "I want to go home."
