Glossary of Terms
Harness Racing
A sport which consists of horses pulling wheeled sulkies with drivers around either a mile, half-mile, or 5/8ths of a mile oval track.
Trotter
Gait in which the horse goes from side to side using left/right - front/rear combination alternating with right/left - front/rear.
Pacer
Gait in which the horse moves in a "rocking" motion - left front/left rear alternating with right front/right rear. Some horses do this naturally, others require the help of hobbles, a type of harness that connects the two legs on the same side together to stimulate the "pacing" motion.
Purse
The money paid in set disbursements to the winners and runners-up in harness race competition.
Colt
A young, male horse capable of siring young.
Gelding
A male horse that has been neutered.
Filly
A young, female horse of racing age.
Mare
An older female horse capable of breeding.
Dam
The term given to the mother of a new foal.
Stallion
An older male horse that is being offered for breeding purposes. Also known as a "Standing Stallion".
Sire
The term given to a male horse as the father of a new foal.
