Walkabout Open Book Test. (No notebooks)
You will have the whole English period to complete the test.
(Journals are also due this period)
Note: Examples from the book are necessary for full marks.
Exact quotes from the book are allowed, but after quotes you use as your
answer you are still expected to explain it in your own words.
Section 1 - "Questions about Details" (2
marks each)

What happened to the plane? The pilot?

Why do they start walking, and why should they have stayed by the plane?

Explain Peter and Mary's first conflict with nature, their hunger!

Why does Peter have an uneasy feeling even after the food had lessened
his hunger?

Describe the mirage they see from the top of the hills.

When the Boy tries to communicate his worries to Mary, a tragic and
sad misunderstanding occurs. Read over p87-88 and explain how and why that
misunderstanding occurs.

The final scene in Chapter 14 is a "tragic" one. Mary realises
something very profound and important, but she realizes it too

late. What does she come to understand? Explain it in your
own words.

Section 3 - "General Questions Useful For Any Story"
(5 marks each)

Section 4 - "Vocabulary" (15 Marks)
Use 5 words from the lists given out in class. Use them in
proper sentences. Use them as we would use them in normal speech.
You cannot use the example from the book.
(3 marks for each perfect use, 2 for a general sense of word, 1
for correct 'part of speech only'; total of 15 marks)
Also on Monday:
Journal Entries are all due.
I am expecting them about half a page long and expressing completed
ideas.
Here are the five journal entries you should have:
i) "Describe a journey you have been on."
ii) "What would you be thinking, feeling, and doing, if you were
in Peter and Mary's situation stuck in the Australian desert?"
iii) "Predict what will happen to the characters after chapter 11"
iv) "Give your opinion (good/bad?) on three differences between
the film and the book Walkabout"
v) "For you, what is the most significant event in the whole book,
and what do you think the author is trying to say by showing this event?"
