I am suffering harassment & racial abuse, but what can I do ? First & foremost keep notes of everything that happens. Amongst the things you need to do are to note the date, the time and your location. Be specific. If your at home, say exactly where you were (living room, bedroom for instance). Was there anybody there with you ? Make notes of that too, an independant witness may be able to corroborate your version of events, remember to state the location of the witness as well. Make detailed notes of what happened, no matter how trivial it may seem, it may be important at a later date. Did you recognise any of the perpetrators ? From
the case outlined on this site you will realise that video tapes provide
strong evidence. If you are in fear of abuse or harassment consider this
option. Many Do It Yourself stores sell security cameras, normally alongside
other security devices such as locks and bolts and burglar alarms. Prices
vary, and can be from as low as £ 60-00 though the average price
seems to be around £ 100-00. They are comparatively easy to install
and can normally be attached to an ordinary domestic video recorder. Consider
the best location to install it, this will have a bearing on the type of
camera which you buy. Always buy a camera that has a built in microphone.
This has the advantage that not only can it be seen what has happened,
it can also be heard.
Who Can I Turn To For Help ?
The Home Office has a site at; The advice there pre-supposes that racists and those that condone racist behaviour do not operate within the support systems. You will by now have seen this site in its entirity, (if you have followed the links from the main index page), and only you can make the decision as to whom you approach. Ultimately you will have to approach your Local Police Force, even though many of them admit to "institutionalised racism", armed with the evidence you have obtained. Whatever you do, do not attend the Police Station alone, take someone with you who can understand what is happening, make a note of those Police who you have had contact with, and always remember to obtain a receipt for any evidence you leave at the Police Station.
