This page is still under construction, though a partial outline of its contents is already presented below.
1. The Risks... and the Rewards of International Investing
The Triple Wallop of a currency devaluation, dividend reduction, and capital loss due to a decline in stock prices.
Conversely, a 3-fold gain from a currency appreciation, increased dividends, and an appreciation of stock prices.
2. The Costs
Currency exchange costs arising from the fees charged by banks as currency is converted from one currency to another. Banks would deduct its fees from the proceeds of converting dollars to pesos, and vice versa. Thus, a foreign investor is automatically penalized anywhere from 2-5% due to these fees as compared to a local investor.
3. Other Risks
Political risks- government instability, threat of nationalization
Economic Risks- differences in accounting practices, corruption, unstable policies
4. Choosing a Philippine Broker
List of member brokers of the Philippine Stock Exchange at http://www.pse.com.ph
Of course, the brokerage I would recommend is All AsiaSecurities Management Corp. Not only because is it the company I am affiliated with, but also because of its extensive experience with retail individual foreign investors.
Account opening forms are available upon request, sent via e-mail or thru snail mail.
5. Transaction Costs, Complaints, and Other Common Questions
Read the Common Questions Answered section of this webpage. It provides details of how Phil. brokerages are organized, how to make complaints, transaction costs, communication costs, the pros and cons of having named certificates, etc.
6. Listed Companies and Sector Groupings
A list of companies listed in the PSE, arranged alphabetically as to stock symbols, are available here.
This same list, with the companies arranged by the PSE-defined sectors are on the other hand available here.
7. Research Reports
Research Reports, other than those in this webpage, are available to clients.
8. Mutual Funds
All AsiaCapital, our parent company, runs the All AsiaFund, a balanced (equity and fixed income) fund. I am preparing a separate webpage for this, but meantime, interested investors can always e-mail me.
