Qi Gong Qi gong (pronounced chee goong) is a Chinese system of cultivation and deliberate control of a higher form of vital energy for preventive and therapeutic health care. Qi (or chi) means air, breath of life or vital essence. Gong means work, self-discipline, achievement or mastery. This art combines aerobic conditioning, meditation, and relaxation. Recently there has been an emphasis on the use of Chi energy for healing others. This is referred to as "External Chi Healing," (External Qi Gong) or Chi Sao. Chi energy is directed through the hands or eyes towards the patient. Often, "miraculous" improvements in health are cited as a result of a Chi Gong practitioner working with an ill person. External Chi healing is historically one of the main applications of Chi energy cultivation.
