I am proud to be a civilian member of the 20th Maine

Vol. Inf. Co. F re-enactment group.

I write letters to the men using different period personas.

I try to create authentic looking missives while

keeping the content as personally accurate to each soldier's persona.

I am hoping to do further research into the Company and of

the period, particularly women's civilian roles.

The Twentieth Regiment Maine Vol. Inf. left for Alexandria, Va., September 3. They were initially attached to 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Army Corps, Army Potomac. In October of 1862 they became part of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Army Corps; they remained in this position until July, 1865.

~COMPANY F'S ROSTER~

THE MEN OF THE 20TH MAINE VOL. INF. COMPANY F

Seth W. CLARK, Pvt. Co. F - At age 33, Clark, a farmer from Bloomfield, enlisted on July 24, 1862. He was 5 ft. 9 inches tall, with blue eyes and brown hair. He spent much of the Fall of 1862 sick in hospital at Antietam Ford. Listed as present for duty until July 2, when he was killed in action on Little Round Top.

Frank B. CURTIS, Pvt. Co. F - Mustered in at Portland on August 29, 1862, Curtis was 37 years old. He was reported sick at Hospital No. 6, Master St., Philadelphia, from Sept. 17, 1862 to March, 1863. He was again hospitalized at Lovell General Hospital, Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island, and returned to duty May 10, 1863. He was killed in action on July 2.

Elfin J. FOSS, Pvt. Co. F - Foss enlisted at the age of 22 at Embden for service with Co. F. He ws 5 ft. 7 1/2 in. tall, with light hair and blue eyes. He was born in Lexington and was a farmer. Company rolls list him as present for duty with the exception of a short time in November 1862, when he was sick in quarters. He was killed in action on July 2.

John FOSS, Cpl.. Co. F - I have listed Foss as a Corporal, for Company rolls state he was "promoted from a private" on Feb. 9, 1863. Foss was 21 in 1862, at Athens. He was born in Brighton and was a farmer. His description lists him as 5 ft. 9 in., brown hair and blue eyes. He received his $25.00 bounty. Killed in action on July 2 at Gettysburg.

Benjamin W. GRANT, Pvt. Co. F - Grant was a farmer, born in Philips. He enlisted in Cornfield on July 26, 1862. He was 20 years old upon enlistment, with brown hair and blue eyes, 6 ft. 1 in. tall. He spent a short while in hospital at Antietam Ford in the Fall of 1862, and was present for duty until July 2, when he was killed in action.

Charles F. HALL, Pvt. Co. F - Born in Hainsville, he listed his occupation as laborer, age as 19,. 5 ft. 11 inches tall, with light hair and hazel eyes. He enlisted at Bangor in the 2nd Maine on July 3, 1861, and was transferred to the 20th Maine on May 26, 1863. He was killed in action July 2.

William S. HODGDON, Cpl. Co. F - Only 18 and a farmer upon enlistment Aug. 2, 1862, Hodgdon was a native of Embden. He was 5 ft. 8 in. tall, with light hair and black eyes. He received a bounty of $25.00. He is listed as a Corporal, Company rolls list him as "promoted from a private, Feb. 3, 1863". He was also listed as killed in action July 2 at Gettysburg.

Pascal M. TRIPP, Cpl. Co. F - This farmer from Sanford enlisted as a Private at the age of 32 on July 20 in Harmony, Maine. His personal description was 5 ft. 9 in. tall, black hair and hazel eyes. He was promoted from Private on Feb. 9, 1863 and was killed in action at Gettysburg July 2. He left behind a wife, Lucy, and a son, Clarence.

John WENTWORTH, Pvt. Co. F - Born in Brighton and farming at the beginning of the War, Wentworth enlisted at the age of 26 at Athens on July 3, 1862. He was 5 ft. 11 in. tall, with dark hair and grey eyes. His records indicate he was present for duty at all times. He was killed in action at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863.

Oscar WYER, Pvt. Co. F - Enlisting on July 15, 1861, Wyer first saw duty with the 2nd Maine Regiment, Co. G. He was born in Bangor and was 18 years old. His height was 5 ft. 6 inches, he had light hair and dark eyes. He was transferred to the 20th Maine in May of 1863. He died on July 3 of wounds received the previous day in the fighting on Little Round Top.
