Helena Bertinelli  (Huntress II)

Helena Bertinelli, the current Huntress, is the daughter of  former New York City ganglord Guido Bertinelli.  Growing up in such a dangerous environment, having even been kidnapped once, she became hardened to the world...learning to depend on herself.   When a rival gang wiped out her entire family, she knew she had to strike a balance against injustice.  Having trained in a variety of physical and mental disciplines, she was well equipped to adapt to her new lifestyle.  Donning the cloak of the Huntress, she established a reputation, first in New York, and now  in Gotham City, of being a dedicated heroine.  In her secret identity, Helena fights crime another way, by preventing it as a caring inner city teacher.

        Huntress' Allies

Since the start of her crime fighting career, she has attracted attention...attention from the criminal community and from her fellow heroes.  This has not always been a good thing, for in the beginning, her actions leaned more toward non-traditional methods...she became more a vigilante than a "superhero".  Perhaps her strongest critic over the years has been the Batman, especially once she moved to his city and made her presence known.  Still, she won over his respect and that of her peers, so much so that she was offered membership into the Justice League America.  This loose nit group of champions were a bit less serious in their approach toward crime, and this led to her limiting her association with them.  After internal differences and other circumstances resulted in that group disbanding, she again operated solo.

On one occasion, a student of hers named Timothy Drake, alias the Robin, was drawn into the same case that she was, and the two ended up working well together on it, despite their age difference.  Tim also learned that Helena and the Huntress were one, an although first uncomfortable about this, she soon learned to trust the young man.  She also gained a valuable ally in Nightwing (aka Dick Grayson), who more conformed with her rather direct approach.  In fact, the two developed feelings for on another, feeling that have subsided for the time being, though they still work together on cases.

Meanwhile, the Justice League of America had reformed, this time with a more stable group of members, including all of the above.  After three other members had left the team, the founding seven members initiated a recruitment drive.  One of those responding was the Huntress, realizing the benefit of allying with fellow heroes, both for herself and for the benefit of mankind.  On the missions she has served, she has displayed tremendous dedication, and become critical to that team's success.
