I have to admit that I would have never thought about reading any of Kerouac's books. So now, you are wondering why I read it!
Well, because an old friend of mine used a citation from the book as his signature for his emails which intrigued me. And when he gave me a summary of it, I wanted to read it. To be honest, it took me awhile to read it. Not that it is a long book, little less than a hundred pages but the content was very very disturbing.
If any of you know Kerouac's style, you know he had a very peculiar one. I had problems reading for that reason. Second of all, the content was disturbing. Tristessa is a young junkie whit the peculiar trait of being beautiful. The person who recounts the story is not her but some American who loves her. He tells us about his feelings, his experience, the way he sees everything around him.
It is a journey into Mexico City, its poor streets, its junkie area, and it is a very sad love story. It's a love story where love does not win.
This is my way of interpreting it but some of you might think the exact opposite.
However, for those of you who have issues with drugs and don't want to read a book where drugs are as important as the main character, well do not read it. That's the only warning I can give you.
