North Atlantic, middle of March. The Coast Guard patrol plane is surveying the icebergs' routes. Suddenly they spot the hull of a ship encased in an iceberg.

They mark it and return to their base. A few weeks later, Dirk Pitt and Dr Hunnewell lands on a coast guard ship to find that iceberg and the ship. Despite what they say to the captain of the ship, they are not looking for a russian ship with state of the art technology, but for the Lax, the ship owned by a do-gooder who mysteriously disappeared along with its crew. On board of that ship is an important piece of equipment that would benefit the entire world for the searcg of underwater mineral mines.

Spotting the derelict, they land with the helicopter and find to their dismay that the ship has been utterly torched along with its crew. All crew members are accounted for and Dr Hunnewell identifies positively Kristjan Fyrie, the Icelandic do-gooder.

Then, they go on Iceland, their ultimate destination. But on the way, a mysterious black jetplane tries to get the helicopter down with Dr Hunnewell and Pitt in it. By sheer luck, Pitt succeeds in taking the plane down in the water but too late to save Dr Hunnewell who dies of his injury. Then starts a search for the persistence of an unknown powerful enemy who tries desperately to kill Pitt.

A theory is taking shape but the why and who is still foggy for Pitt.

Iceberg is one of the oldest Dirk Pitt's adventure where AL Giordino has no part. It's a short book, very entertaining and a nice book to take on a weekend, like most of Cussler's novels.

Have fun reading it.
