The latest in the Dirk Pitt's adventures, Flood Tide is an excellent, though very thick, book. Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino are two employees of the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA). They are under the orders of Admiral Sandecker, the founder of NUMA. Pitt and Giordino are known for their reckless behavior, but somehow they always survive the worst possible situations, despite going up against very hard and intelligent adversaries. In Flood Tide, Pitt is recupurating from his latest adventure (Shock Wave) at Lake Orion where he is staying at his friend's house. He soon realized the house has been thoroughly searched and video cameras have been put almost everywhere. Nothing more was needed to excite his curiosity. With the help of one of his colleagues who sent him some underwater equipment, he searched the lake and the property whose owner has bought everything but the land where his friend's house is. He soon discovers a bed of corpses lying on the bottom of the lake. Suddenly, he sees people thrown down to their death and being the man he is, he starts rescuing them all. It soon appears all of them are illegal Chinese immigrants except one who is an INS agent. He rescues mostly all of them despite the chase given by two helicopters sent by Qin Shang (the owner of the property on which the Chinese are led when not thrown to their deaths). At the same time, Admiral Sandecker is called by the White House and is asked by the president to investigate a ship which belongs to Qin Shang to try to find how Qin Shang gets the Chinese immigrants on US soil. Without Knowing it, Pitt has started the investigation with Lake Orion and he is sent with Al Giordino to survey the United States. Unluckily for them, they cannot find anything on the ship beside the fact that she has been stripped off of everything. At the same time, Julia Marie Lee, the INS agent continues her investigation and meets the path of Pitt several more times. Pitt and Julia uncovers an enormous plan subsidize by the People's Republic of China to increase the chineses population which would lead to the division of the Us in a near future. Pitt, Julia, Al and all the members of Numa are trying their best to stop an invasion lead by Qin Shang. It's a good book, it never stops. It goes from one corner of the world to the other. And of course, don't be surprised if Pitt gets the girl. : )
