A long, long time ago were the Lannisters, the Baratheons, the Greyjoys, the Stark, the Targaryens.
At one time all had a common enemy: the Targaryens, the dragons keepers. The targaryens lost the battle to the Baratheons. The last dragons were killed and a new age arrived with a new king, Robert Baratheon, who lost his love at the hand of the Targaryen and have an undying hate for them and will see all of them killed, babes, women, all.
The book starts much later, when the Hand of the King Jon Arryn dies. The king comes to Winterfell and asks Eddard Stark to be his new Hand. Eddard wants to refuse so much, he wants to stay at Winterfell but has no choice, Catelyn, his wife, urges him to accept.
While at Winterfell, Bran, one of Eddard's sons, happens on something he shouldn't have seen, and he's pushed from the window to meet his fate. Jon, Eddards' only bastard wants to become a knight of the Night Watch. For him, no wife, just the black garment that the black knights wears. Sansa and Arya, his two daughters follow Eddard to King's Landing. Sansa is supposed to marry Joffrey, King Robert's eldest son. Tyrion, brother to the queen decides to follow Jon back to the Night's Watch. Catelyn survives an attempt of murder and finds out that the dagger allegedly belonged to Tyrion. She makes him a hostage and goes to Jon Arryn's landhold where she found her sister who has lost her mind.
Far far away, the last descendants of the Targaryens are trying to get a host to start a war to get the Seven kingdoms back. Daenerys weds Khal Drogo who promises to give the men to her brother Vyseris. Accompanying them a deserter of the Night's Watch and who wants nothing more than to go back to the kingdoms.
A war ensues between the Lannisters and the Starks, but why you will have to read.
Rob Stark leads one army while on the other hand, Jamie, Cersei and Tyrwin Lannister leads the other.
So many people with a real claim on the throne, so many people dying for a throne.
And the Knights of the Night Watch disappearing and reappearing dead but not dead.
It is a world of magic, enticing, with tales of dragons, elfs, giants.
It is an excellent book, and I have to say that I read until my eyes were burning. Real dragons, sorcerers, magic, traitors, plotters, innocents, children, adults, all the ingredients to make an excellent intrigue.
It is very rare when I like fantasy books, this one is better than most, and creates an entire new world. It has nothing to do with the Lord of the Rings, it's only a claim on the throne, but who will win is the question.
And the ultimate question, can there be a winner in any war?
My advice, get it any way you can..........
And coming soon, A Clash of kings, the sequel.
