SAAB's sixth jet fighter the Gripen (Griffin) is proably the most advanced and capable single seat fighter currently in service. The Gripen is designed to replace Royal Swedish Air Force's Viggens and remaining Drakens.Th first prototype first flew on December 9 1988 and crashed shortly after due to problems with the fly-by-wire system. The second prototype flew in May 1990 and deliveries began in June 1993.
The JAS-39 features delta canard configuration an single F404 (to keep the cost down), fly-by-wire, an Ericsson/GMAv PS-05/A pulse doppler radar wih multimode and look down-shoot down capability, a modren cockpit with three multifunction displays a wide angle HUD and HOTAS controls. Thirty percent of the Gripen by weight is carbon composits and the aircraft can be easily maintained in the feild.
SAAB is able to market the Gripen aggressivly tot he export market and has signed an international marketing agreement with British Aerospace. Export Gripens would ne fully NATO interoperable and feature inflight refuelling.
