The prowler is a tactical electronic warfare aircraft based on the recently retired A-6 Intruder. The EW version of the Inrtuder is the EA-6B. Grumman developed the Prowler in 1966 to replace the EKA-3B skywariors on US carrier decks. The EA-6B is based on the A-6 but the fuselage is streched to allow two extra crew members and there is a bulbous faring on the top of the fin that houses an antenna. First flight was on May 25 1968 with service entry on 1971. In all 170 were built for the USN and the USMC throught ot 1991.. With the pending retirement of the EF-111 the US DoD is forming five joint USN and USAF Ea-6 squadrons to handle EW missions for USN and USAF.
