The A-50 was developed to replace Russia's first AWACS aircraft the Tu-126 "Moss". Development for a replacement to the Tu-126 started in 1970's resulting in the A-50. The A-50 is based on the II-76 freighter with the obvious difference being the rotodome containing the Liana radar on top. The crew facilities inside the A-50 are spartan, there are no rest bunks and high noise levels. The first A-50 entered service in 1984 and around 20 have been built. The A-50's capabilities are reportadly the same as the E-3 sentry's (described seperatly). It can control aircraft and detect incoming cruise missiles. The improved A-50U has an updated Vega Shmel-M radar.
