  • SEQUENTIAL CIRCUITS

Dave Smith's Sequential Circuits Corporation was responsible for the first practical polysynth, the Prophet 5,launched in 1978.Though it went through many revisions, the Prophet was basically a five-note polyphonic, analogue synth with programmable memories and old-fashioned knobs-and-slider controls. Its impact cannot be overestimated;for the first time, ordinary musicians could afford a fully programmable, polyphonic synthesizer, with great sounds derived from stable oscillators,a strong filter and

extensive cross-modulation facilities.Sequential was one of the company responsible for developing the MIDI standard, and took advantage of it in launching the Prophet 600,one of the first MIDI synths,in 1982.Despite having a great sound, the Pro-600 never made much of an impact, and neither did the Prophet 10(basically two Prophet 5s bolted together)or the excellent but pricey velocity-responsive Prophet T8.More popular was the Pro 1,an unfashionably monophonic synth with an arpeggiator and

sequencer, launched in 1981.Sequential's demise started with a series of ill-fated experiments with multi-timbral keyboards including the Six-Trax,Multi-Trax and Max.Not powerful enough in solo mode, and produced too early to take advantage of the boom in home computer controlled sequencing, none were successful.Critical acclaim for the Prophet 2000 sampler and VS digital synth didn't add up to much in the way of sales, and Sequential was bought out by Yamaha.
  • SMPTE
  • Image
Pronounced Simp-tee,an acronym derived from the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.SMPTE is a digital time-coding system which allows multi-track tape to be synchronised with film or video which has been coded in the same way.Though it's now possible to buy SMPTE-to-MIDI synchronizers for a few hundred pounds few keyboard players are likely to encounter SMPTE directly unless they specialise in film or video work.
