One of the major league musical instrument companies,KORG is now partially owned by YAMAHA,which allows the company access to technology such as the FM system, which is used in Korg's DS8 and 707 keyboards. From a start,in Organ top synths such as the Micro Preset,KORG has developed a huge range of keyboards, including the first practical polyphonic analogue synths, the PS series, patchable monosynths including the MS10/20,the early budget, polyphonic,Polysix,MIDIfied successors like the Poly 61M and

Poly 800,modules such as the EX800,and digital/analogue hybrids like the DW6000 and top-class DW8000;as well as drum machines, effects unit and sequencers.Korg's current flagships are the DSS1,a sampling synthesizer with a huge range of editing capabilities;and the M1,a 'workstation' featuring samploid sound synthesis,built-in effects, sequencer and drum sounds.

After Yamaha's FM,the'next big thing' turned out to be Roland's LA-Linear Arithmetic-synthesis.The name doesn't give away much about how the system works.Basically, for the task of synthesizing complex tones,Roland decided to sample them, store them in ROM,and use them as the attack portions of sounds which could be sustained with an analogue-style synthesizer voice.Launch in the D50,still Roland's flagship synth,LA is capable of creating some incredibly realistic and evocative sounds.More to the

point, its comprehensible to synthesists brought up on analogue instruments, featuring familiar envelope, filter and other parameters.Despite criticisms that the programmer can only create variations dictated by the nature of the sampled 'partials',LA has been a huge success in the D50,10,20 and 110,and has been imitated by Kawai in the K1 and Korg in the M1.Is this the future of sound synthesis,or will some other principle such as resynthesis become the next 'big thing' ?
