| FREQUENCY MODULATION (FM) |
| FM was launched in Yamaha's DX7,and remains one of the most popular forms of sound synthesis, used in the DX synths and instruments by Elka/Orla,Korg and others.Based on theories developed by Dr.John Chowning,FM uses digital oscilators known as Operators. Each operator creates only sine waveforms, but by modulating each other at high frequencies they can create extremely complex sounds. The DX7 has six operators:the DX9/21/27/100/FB01/TX81Z have four. These can be interconnected in different patterns |

| GATE |
| In analogue synthesis, the signal which initiates an envelope cycle, while the CV determines the pitch. As with CV,a lack of standardisation in levels and polarities made it difficult to interface equipment from different manufacturers, hence the development of the MIDI standard. |
