G'day and welcome (or Welcome BACK to sum) to "Nightstick's Post", my creation that like a bastard child refuses to go away and forced me in a kind of DYI therapy on the reality of two things;
1. Getting old! (hey I'm 50 this year sportfans!) AND...
2. Unfortunetly no longer being a part of an adventure and industry that gave me a sense of self worth I've found impossible to recreate since.
I created a series of web pages in the early 1980's to share my experiences of a job I was then working in Healthcare (Hospital Security), and over the years I added pages and information as it then came to hand, including "war stories" (Tales on the job) to the latest changes in the world of the Australian security industry as it impacted us in healthcare.
Since 2005, I have dumped my duty belt, blues & boots and had to medically retired from the workforce due to being injured on the job (HOD - Hurt on Duty) but lately the idea keeps nagging me to keep a time capsule, if you will - about my experiences as to my knowledge, no one else here in Australia has set down anywhere on the WWW their observations about one of the challenging roles out there from a 'operators' point of view!
As you read, I hope you may come away with a better understanding and appreciation of what it was & in most cases - still is like - in working in a 'mini city' of that is not just people, but skilled and dedicated professional staff from the clerks in E.D to the Nurses & Doc's - sometimes handling enormous stresses & strain and of people - ordinary everyday men & women you may pass in your car or walking anywhere that in an instant, find themselves alone, bleeding & in pain, under bright lights being surrounded by strangers.
Now don't worry it's NOT all Doom & Gloom! You'd may be surprised of the nature of these workplaces, in healthcare one of the frontline coping mechinisms IS HUMOUR and I hope I managed to illustrate it here as I never have met a bunch of funner people in my working life than at some of the Hospitals I worked at and in keeping with that theme I tell of the patients & visitors to our doors.
So sit back, grab a brew and enjoy AND don't forget to bookmark me...ya never know you may wanna visit again!
Cheers
and all the breast
Shel
