Endnotes for the Native Question
Bibliography

To conclude, I was tracing the first contact between the Mariannhill missionaries and the Natives. The period I was working in it varies from1882 to 1920s. I have managed to draw different arguments on the issue concerning the Natives. I found that Schimlek have strong points that the natives were cannibals but they are not strong enough to convince someone who does not know the history of the Zulu people and he failed to prove his statements. I also found that he seemed to be a confused man because he stated that the Natives were cannibals but at the same time he recognized their similarities with the Missionaries, for an example he maintained their beliefs in the immorality of the soul.  Balling have different perspective of the Natives. he saw them as human which enabled me to conclude that the Mariannhill Missionaries first came to contact with people not cannibals.

On the issue of working for the Missionaries I found that the Mission did employ people regardless of gender differences. What I found to be painful is that domestic women were not paid wages in the form of money but they received it in terms of food. Women were the last to be admitted in the Mission in1885 this was because the Mission was male dominated.  Women's education was different from that of males, they were encouraged to be interested in the so called women's work.

The state did not interfere much in the mission but it made sure that it laws were obeyed e.g. the caring of passes. The Mission used tight law to control the people. To those who wanted to preserve their culture it was unfair what was being done by the mission to abolish their certain ways of living like polygamy.

Problems arose between the Missionaries and the Natives. The more they knew and understand each other the more they encountered problems. Language and traditional healers  were a major problem. At the end they managed to deal with them and solved them.

Overall in the issue of the Natives and Missionaries their contact was quiet an interesting experience. Although problems arose but through their cooperation they managed to solve their problems and everything was smooth until the apartheid era.
