Trip Report

I recently rode Amtrak trains 66 and 67 (the north and southbound Twilight Shoreliner's) up and down Amtrak's NEC. The view from the upper berth of an Amtrak viewliner sleeper is spectacular.

I made several mental notes to myself, here they are in geographical order, south to north:

-LANDOVER tower in Landover, MD is still standing, it can also be viewed from the Washington Metro Orange Line subway.

-BOWIE tower in Bowie, MD still standing. The tower has been restored (anyone know by whom?) and has a classic PRR keystone tower sign fixed to it.

-PERRY tower and Perryville Station in MD continue to look good.

-DAVIS tower in Newark, Del still standing. Also saw a CR road freight departing the Chrysler plant in Newark.

-Construction at Wilmington, Del train station. Some sort of wooden wall erected
on one of the platforms. Saw an AEM7 being worked on in the Wilmington shops.

-"Am-boxes" and MHC's on one of the tracks at 30th Street Station. Assume were cut off the Pennsylvanian.

-North Philadelphia Station has been cosmetically restored. Amtrak currently using an "am-shack" located on the other side of the tracks. NORTH PHILADELPHIA tower still active; saw a light on.

-SHORE tower still standing.

-Passed two CR switchers at what I think was Torresdale.

-SEPTA Cornwells Heights Station lookin' good.

-Passed SEPTA Trenton local at Bristol.

-NJT consists laying over in yard at Trenton as usual.

-New NJT Hamilton station. Very nice looking; has a parking deck.

-Princeton Jct.-No changes, but cannot pass this famous location without comment.

-New Brunswick-Temporary high level platforms in place over track 1; we are
currently running on track three, due to MOW work.

-Metuchen-NJT passengers waiting for New York local. Crossed over from track 3 to track 2.

-Rahway-Light on in UNION tower. Overtook NJT local leaving the station.

-Newark-Lights on in DOCK tower. Got my first look at the NJT Kearny connection with the ex-DL&W.

-Twin Portals-Engineer blows two long, one short, and one long prior to entering the tunnel.

-Stepped off at New York Penn Station. Saw: E60 602 with a lone baggage car, two outbound LIRR trains, one NJT train for Long Branch, and one NJT train for Dover.

That's all folks.
