Aircraft preservation :

Classic Fighters

Founded by a few Belgian aircraft enthusiasts, Classic Fighters has become a very ambitious organisation currently operating a Hawker Hunter PR.11 and restoring a Hunter T.Mk.7 to airworthy status.

The organisation is currently hard at work to obtain hangar space and permission to use the runway at the former Belgian Air Force training base of Brustem which was closed down in 1996. If negotiations are succesful, Belgian enthusiasts are likely to enjoy an active aircraft museum in the near future. Classic Fighters indeed intends to display their growing collection in an active manner, very comparable to what happens at Duxford airfield in Great Britain. At the same time, they intend to share the premises with other warbirds operators scattered around several Belgian airfields that are more often than not hardly suited for this purpose. Considering that the nearby town of Sint Truiden wants to promote Brustem as a general aviation airfield, interesting things are likely to occur in the Low Countries !

Currently, Classic Fighters operates the ex-Royal Navy Hawker Hunter GA.11 WT723 / G-PRII on behalf of the owners Stick and Rudder Ltd. The aircraft is something special since it is the sole survivor of 4 PR.11's constructed.

Undergoing restoration to airworthy status at the military base of Weelde, near the Dutch border, is ex-Royal Navy Hawker Hunter T.Mk.7 XL601. It is intended to be restored in the striking red/white color scheme of its first operator, the Royal Air Force.

More plans are at hand at Classic Fighters. There is rumour about a Republic F-84F Thunderstreak and Lockheed F-104G Starfighter to be restored to airworthiness... These would definitely be unique additions to the airshow circuit. Let us hope these plans can see fruition in a very near future !
