Chapter #11
ALONE
A long time ago back in Junior High School I had to do a book report for English class, and it had to be a non-fiction book. I looked at all kinds of books and nothing seemed to interest me and then finally I came across this book written by a Naval Rear Admiral, named Richard Byrd. I always liked war stories and reading about military history, so I got that book and started reading it, and I learned a valuable lesson from it, dont judge a book (or person) by its cover. What the Admiral wrote about was the Antarctic, how he established Little America and other things. I dont remember very much about the book except the fact that he spent 5 months alone doing research in the bitter cold. At many times we like to get away and spend some time alone, but can you imagine being completely cut off from everything for 5 months? I cant. Even the most hardened have a hard time dealing with being put into solitary confinement and sometimes break down from the experience. I think this is one of the cruelest of punishments to be given to anyone.
After God created the Heavens and the Earth and all it contains, He looked down upon Adam and said this in (TLB) Genesis 2:18 And the Lord God said, "It isn't good for man to be alone; I will make a companion for him, a helper suited to his needs." Sometimes we complain about our spouses, but did God pick them for us or did we? Do we treat them the way that we should? And if we dont, can we really expect them to treat us any different? I got married when I was a kid and started raising a family right away; I worked hard, but drank and drugged just as hard. I didnt appreciate my wife and never gave her the help or attention that she deserved and after seven years of being unfaithful and abusive she told me to hit the road. I was shocked, and really couldnt figure out why she wanted out, what an idiot I was. If you plant poison ivy, watermelons dont grow, the Bible puts it another way. We read in Job 4:8 Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same. And on the flip side of the coin we read.
Psalm 126:5 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.
Hosea 10:12 Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.
Now lets take a look at a what The Bible Illustrator has to say about wives, some of these are serious, some are humorous, I hope you can tell the difference and ladies please no hate mail, hahahahahaha.
A word to the wife is sufficient, provided that word is yes.
The man of the hour is the one whose wife asked him to wait a minute.
If you don't think women are explosive, try dropping one.
The best time to mow the grass is just after your wife suggests it.
The wife who listens to every word her husband says is probably looking for a hole in his alibi.
Words are powerful. For instance, if you say to a woman, "How cool you look," she's pleased. But try telling her she doesn't look so hot.
It's too bad all women don't marry archaeologists, for the older she gets the more interested he is in her.
A hundred men may make an encampment, but it takes a woman to make a home.
When a man answers the phone he reaches for a pencil. A woman grabs a chair.
God made woman when man was in his first sleep, and man hasn't had any repose since.
Women can never be as successful as men; they have no wives to advise them.
Most women's magazines have fifty pages of recipes and fifty pages of diets.
Woman has been placed at a disadvantage; man can now travel faster than sound.
After winning an argument with his wife, the wisest thing a man can do is apologize.
The best way to remember your wife's birthday is to forget it once.
The best way to compliment your wife is frequently.
A diplomat is a man who can make his wife believe she would look fat in a fur coat.
The safest way to disagree with your wife is very quietly.
Genuine happiness is when a wife sees a double chin on her husband's old girlfriend.
Many husbands go broke on the money their wives save at sales.
When a man brings his wife flowers for no reason--he'd better have one.
The trouble with wives is that they'd rather mend your ways than your socks.
The young preacher was shocked to hear the well-known evangelist utter the words; "I have spent some of the happiest moments of my life in the arms of another man's wife. Yes, I have spent some of the happiest moments of my life in the arms of another man's wife." Then, following a pause, the evangelist added, "That woman was my mother." "I've got to use that!" the young pastor thought to himself. A few weeks later, as he was speaking to a civic group, the phrase leapt into his mind and he exclaimed, "I have spent some of the happiest days of my life in the arms of another man's wife." Then, after another long pause, the young man muttered meekly, "But for the life of me I can't remember who she was."

Now lets get serious again, I believe that marriage is a gift from God and can be a very beautiful and rewarding thing.
In Marriage & Divorce magazine, the March 1980 issue, these statistics were given:
Right now in the United States 1 out of 3 marriages end in divorce.
However, in a marriage where both people were married in a church, the divorce rate is 1 out of 50.
In a marriage where the couple is married in a church, they attend church every Sunday, and they pray and read the Bible together, the divorce rate is 1 out of 1,105.
That's the difference that Jesus Christ makes in a marriage. This is what Gods Word says on the subject.
Eph 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and
he is the saviour of the body.
24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own
husbands in every thing.
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for
it;
26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or
any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth
himself.
29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the
Lord the church:
30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his
wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
Another very important point to remember is that a Christian should marry another Christian, and I think this would apply to dating too.
2 Cor.6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship
hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members
of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he,
shall be one flesh.
