Here are pictures of my first attmept at building a lightsaber replica. It is simular to Darth Vader's lightsaber, but is a custom design. I built this saber using instructions from SABERS PLUS . I used Jedi Rider's instructions with a few modifications of my own.

Here are the basics of what I did:

First, I used Jedi Rider's instructions to get me started. I decided to use his Darth Vader style saber , because I think it looks cool and frankly, it's the easiest to make.

Jedi Rider recommends using Black ABS pipe for the emitter end on the saber. For some reason, none of the hardware stores in my area carry the stuff. So I used white (couldn't find any black) 1.5" diameter PVC pipe instead. I cut about 4 inches of the pipe off, using a hacksaw. Then I cut the end at an angle. I painted the PVC part with black spray paint. I used Jedi Rider's method of duck tape and glue to attach the PVC to the crome Plumbing pipe.

I had a real hard time finding something to use for the grip. I wanted something good. I tried to use the cut windshield wiper, but I just couldn't get it to work. After hour and hours of searching hardware stores for the perfect grip, I found it. The grip of the saber is made out of a black rubber matt, which is used for the bottom of a mechanic's tool drawer. It was at Hechinger's. I cut it about 4 to 5 inches in length, and cut it so it would fit around the plumbing pipe. I used double sided carpet tape and a little bit of glue to attach it.

As for the activation switch, I don't have a drill and I was too afraid of damaging the plumbing pipe. I took a circuit board from an old answering machine, put some rubber corner things (these are the things on the bottom corners of your computer that keep it off your desk top.

I got them at Radio Shack.) on the top and I painted it all silver. I then used mounting tape to attach it to the plumbing pipe.

Lastly, the hole at the emitter side was covered with a metal washer with a flash light part (this is the end part of the flash light with the bulb in it.) glued in the inside. The D-Ring assembly instructions can be found with Jedi Rider's plans.

UPDATE: 10-30-99 - I removed the D-Ring Assembly seen in picture #1 and I added a clip assembly. I used a Micro Swivel Clip from Radio Shack. Part # 17-550. This is almost exactly like the clip used in Episode I.

I glued the round tap to the grip using epoxy and the clip fits nicely on my utility belt. The lightsaber slides into the clip on my belt just like in Episode I.
