Here is the 1st wooden saber I have seen. Personally I think it looks great. It's a new avenue lots of people have not thought about trying. Check it Out!
This Maul saber design created by Paul will be used to make a wooden replica by MIchael. Michael will be selling the sabers for $60.00. Let him know you saw it here! Michaels - NEW DARTH MAUL SABER:
Here's how I did it:
First, I printed off a picture of Ben's ANH saber (my obvious inspiration) and measured it. The picture measured about 5.5 inches, and I knew I wanted the saber 11 inches long or so. So I simply took the different parts of the saber's measurements and multiplied them all by two. An example would be the grip, which was about 2.3 inches in the picture. I multiplied it by 2 and it was 4.6 inches on the actual saber I made.
All that's the easy part though. My saber is made up of six separate pieces of wood. To give it the effect of all being one piece, I found the center of each piece, drilled a hole in it, put LOTS of wood glue on it, put a dowel rod in the center (dowel plugs will work as well), and simply connected each piece. Please keep in mind all this is not as hard as it sounds =-).
The darker wood is Walnut and the lighter wood is Maple. This saber was completed on a wood lathe and all together the project only costed about 5 dollars. That includes the wood glue, the rods, and the actual wood.
It took 3 days to complete the saber. It wouldn't have taken as long, but the wood glue has to dry overnight and the varnish has to also. The actual 'molding' of the lightsaber only took a couple hours. The blade color is light blue.
I have not added the activation box, but plan to sometime this week. Once I do, I'll send Los the pictures for you guys to see.
In a week, I plan to make a Darth Maul-type saber. I'll send those pics to Los as well.
